I know these are great tools, but is there a copy of this out there that is more reasonably priced |
You are in luck, the Mystery Men of Michigan just made a close copy. One guy put it this way ... "Take both a LaRue mount and the Brand "X" knockoff into a dark closet, open them, close them, operate them, and you'll quickly figure out what's what.." YMMV. We're here if you need us. ![]() M. LaRue ETA - Don't forget to put on gloves, plus add plenty of sand from the Middle East. |
|
By copy do you mean someone who took one of Larue's patented designs and then made one that "looks" similar but are made out of inferior materials and then has the nerve to write LaRue on them? or Do you mean a design of similar that works like the LaRue mount. If looking for the first one: -airsoft copies can be had for $70+ internation shipping (usually $20-$25) If looking for the second: -American defense recon is the only thing that comes to mind $179 |
buy once, cry once... There's a reason for the LaRue price, and it ain't to fill LaRue's pockets. You get what you pay for. I can understand money during our current times, but if it means holding off until you can afford it, I'd recommend the LaRue over all others. |
|
Here's a very good review on various one piece scope mounts for the AR15. I believe this was written by a memeber on here. www.maxicon.com/guns/optics/one_piece/ar15_onepiece_mounts.htm Hope this helps with your search. -Hokie |

Thanks - that's me! There's not much out there to compare to the SPR-E or the ADM Recon X, and the LaRue is better proven than the ADM, which hasn't had a lot of impartial user feedback posted. I don't know of any other quality mounts that give the same forward offset as those two. You can get the same effect with an extended rail and rings that add up to 1.4-1.5" centerline height, but to get a QR rail with good rings, you won't save a lot. You will have more flexibility, but also more connections to shift or loosen. If you don't need a QR rail, you can use the YHM extended rail and QR or non QR rings, and spend a lot less. If you can afford the SPR-E, it's the best bet, and the extra cash will be forgotten in a few years. |
|
LaRue mounts are the standard by which all other QD mounts are measured. By analogy, if LT mounts were cars and optics were drivers, few in the world compare to the quality and speed of the LaRue ride around the Nurmburgring. Proven, American. Moreover, by purchasing the real product, not the knockoff, you will be awarding and encouraging American innovation rather than undermining it. (BTW: I have 3 LT 104s) |
And there's the Boeing-jockey himself. Wes comes with an encyclopediAR of knowledge, at no extra charge. To all, let me take this perfect opportunity to thank Wes Grant for being an early champion, and an Army-Of-One in getting the word out about the great qualities of our extremely successful scope mounts, the LT-104, the LT-139, the LT-135, etc. Now jealously copied from China to Michigan ... imitation is truly the highest form of flattery. Thanks again Wes. ![]() Mark LaRue |

Funny you should say that I actually work for Boeing. I will save my pennies for the SPR/E. We have a new contract negotiation coming this september. I just put together a complete middy carbine build over a period of time mind you in 5.56 & a 6.8 spc upper build at the same time. So its hard for me to justify spending anymore money till I know if we go on strike or not. I'm not a cheap bastard, just trying to be frugal. But hey looks like I'll be getting one after all. Edwin |
I think I saw a googled thread of a big huge thread comparing the SPR-E to an ADM mount. The ADM mount came on very lacking and was actually sorta damaging to the rails and the scope in terms of marring. Too bad because I actually liked the looks of the ADM mount better but it wasn't functionally efficient. |
MARK - IT IS I WHO SHOULD PUBLICLY THANK YOU. LARUE PRODUCTS IN GENERAL AND THE LARUE SPR SCOPE MOUNTS IN PARTICULAR HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN OUR SUCCESS IN WHAT WE DO IN THE CUSTOM BUILD ARENA. PAUL AND I ARE QUITE PROUD TO HAVE BEEN PICKED AS ONE OF MARK'S TWO ORIGINAL LARUE DEALERS. YOU AND YOUR CREW HAVE ALWAYS TREATED US BETTER THAN FAMILY. BTW, TO THOSE OUT THERE WHO CARE, MSTN'S SPONSORED SHOOTER - AND YOURS, TOO - TARAN BUTLER, WILL NO DOUBT WIN USPSA TACTICAL 3-GUN CHAMP AGAIN THIS YEAR USING THE LARUE LT-139 SCOPE MOUNT. ANY OTHER SCOPE MOUNT MANUFACTURERS HAVE BRAGGING RIGHTS LIKE THAT? GOOD SHOOTING, WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |

Here's an idea since Mr. LaRue is watching this thread. Instead of having the cheap knockoffs on the market ruining your good name, how about making versions of your mounts without the high tech expense adding quick release feature. Figure if you made the SPR-E without all the extra machining steps and it was juts a block with a couple bolts to mount it price would be about half the current model and us poor bastards would be able to afford it. Hell, start a whole new lineup, keep the current products for the operators and mall ninja's who can justify the high dollar bling, and start a "range use" line that heaven forbid you use a wrench to install so your quality mounts make it into the hands of alot more shooters. Untill and entry level LaRue lineup hits the market, budget shooters and range plinkers like myself will unfortunatly have to continue to look elsewhere for parts. |
If it's the thread I'm thinking of (on this board), it was commissioned by a board member who can't really be called objective. There was lots of good info, but I'm big on consensus if I don't have one to test myself, and I just haven't seen a lot of real-world user feedback on the ADM sights. No shortage of consensus on the LaRue mounts, of course. If it wasn't on arfcom, I'd be interested in a link. I haven't seen much on the ADM mounts outside of arfcom. I'd love to buy one and put it through its paces, but the budget's not there these days. Ammo costs are bad enough... |
Better get yourself some Middle East sand and a pair of gloves, 'cause unless I miss my guess, launches just occurred, almost simultaneously, from Ohio and Michigan. ![]() Cracks and crevices my man, it's all about cracks and crevices. ![]() |
My ADM mount (oh oh, gonna get flamed for this ) seems to work quite well.Doesn't leave any damage on the rail, however i've only had it for a week, so i cant really say for sure how good or damageing it is to the rail. I have a big week long shooting competition at the end of May, so i'll be putting the mount through its paces, and see how it performs ETA I just thought like saying this.... I had been looking around for LaRue stuff for quite a while before i ended up getting the ADM low mount for my aimpoint. Unfortunatly (either due to LaRue policies, or the US State Department) they're about as avalable as gold ingots, and sometimes cost as much too. As for QR choices, i had the options of ARMS, or ADM, and the ARMS mounts levers seem to small, and i've heard some bad things about them. Just simple availability |
Hmmm, 3rdtk or the guy's-that-won't-show-themselves. ![]() FWIW, we have an "Import/Export SME" joining us soon, and first order of business is to hammer out the ability to ship to your Canadian market. There is the one small issue ... I can assure you that the firm we pick to represent us in Oh Canada will not be also representing "American Dairy & Milk". ![]() |
|
well then, i can see more money burning a hole in my pocket ![]() FWIW, Wolverine Supplies, The Shooting Edge, and Questar are all great companies with lots of import/export experiance. They have good customer service and know how to treat people right Good to know we'll finally be getting some love in Canada as well ![]() ETA I just wish i knew about this two weeks ago, i could have settled with a cheapie aimpoint low ring for a few weeks |
![]() ![]() LOL, that kinda totally defeats the purpose. |
Maybe you'll have to explain the purpose of a scope mount to me then. In my simplistic view, a scope mount has to hold a scope to the top of a rifle without letting it move around, thats it, nothing more, nothing less. Any other features to it are extras and are not essential to the base function of the mount. How often have you ever had to do a tatical scope change? I'm willing to bet that 99% of the quick release mounts in use today are never touched unless its to make it easier to polish the rails. Sort of like the camo warriors you see at the range stroking off their 6 position stocks like its some kind of phallic substitute. LT already has a good reputation (which is made painfully aparent here on the boards by dropping his name with every other sentence), it would be easy to translate that same name recognition into a more entry level linup. Take Porche as an example, they have their top of the line 911's which built their name, now they have the boxter. Less performance, but still that name and feel to it, and it costs alot less so folks buy the hell out of em. Oh well, it was just an idea, stupid or not. Guess I'll just continue to look for products that will do the job at a reasonable price. Sure they may not have the wizzbang extras, but as long as they perform the task they were designed for, its good enough. |
I'm willing to bet gambling is not your strong point. ![]() LaRue |

Funny you should mention that idea - I've been thinking the same thing lately, due to the lack of a decent extended mount in the $100 and below range. QR mounts are great, and I believe there are lots of people who need and use them, but there are lots of people who mount their optics and leave them in place. The only really decent mount in the $100 and under range is the Armalite, and it's just too low for lots of uses. I've commented several times that they'd lock up the under $100 market if they'd introduce a 1.5" high version of their mount. It also doesn't have the extension a lot of people need with illuminated scopes. That said, a non-QR LaRue SPR and SPR-E, if it were enough cheaper (like half-price) would be a huge hit, I believe. You'd get the good height, the forward offset (no inexpensive mounts have a SPR-E amount of forward offset), enough room for iron sights on the rail behind it, good build quality, and good customer support. Heck, you'd sell a ton of the SPR-E length to DMS-1 users if the price were right. Whether the lack of QR hardware would be enough to drop the price that much is up for question. You can alread get the JP non-QR mount for $150 (though it's not as extended as the SPR-E), and it's an excellent, sturdy, solid piece of gear, so you'd have to go below that to find a niche. |
| I also agree that a non QR LaRue at a lower cost would appeal to many. I was considering one for my new RRA varmint but opted for their scout rail instead. A big reason was that I have both 1" and 30mm tube scopes that I may use at some time and this does offer more flexibility. However, if a solid mount SPR was available at a lower price I may have went that route since that arrangement does have one less connection subject to possible movement. As sturdy as the RRA scout rail appears I can't imagine it moving though. TB |
|
Wow more of you think like me. I was originally looking at buying the millet riser M4 rail and tactical rings because it was alot cheaper than the spr/e. I agree with you guys, you would smoke the competion with a non quick change entry level (non LE/Military/Rambo wanna be Edwin |
I take my scope off my rifle all the time. Just because I can thanks to my LaRue mounts. Sometimes I want a 1-4x on my rifle, and sometimes I want something that goes a little further. It doesn't always have to be tactical to be practical. LaRue mounts make switching zeroed optics convenient and more importantly, actually possible. |
Raptor, Who did you finally end up buying and getting yours from, and what shipper did you choose to have 'er shipped in? ML |
|
You know, this would be a perfect market opportunity for ADM or anyone else looking to expand their mount business. A less expensive, simpler, non QR extended mount would give them some market differentiation and help them to leverage the lower prices in a market segment that's not already dominated by anyone in the industry. |
Yes it would, and hey, they are halfway there as Anonymous Design and Manufacturing already decided my vertical ring design was theirs and copied it's entire look and feel. ![]()

I switch between an Eotech, 1-4x, and a 10x scope on my AR. I hadn't used my 10x for awhile, so the other day I mount it on to see if its still zeroed. All five shots went into the center 1in. circle at 100yards, just the same as before I took it off. Thanks to Larue mounts. They are not cheap, but they are high quality and will last longer than any of us. Larue Tactical is an example of what all American manufacturers should be. |
|
i was offish about larue at first because i thought they were overpriced. after looking on here for so long and everyone singing to the glories of larue i got really interested. after i had a couple of cheap mounts wobble around and not hold the scope in place i started saving for a larue. i bought an spr-e mount and it was worth every penny and then some. the piece of mind of having a mount that will never break (and if anything goes wrong while mark's still tickin he'll take care of the fixin). i dont worry about banging my rifle around or the mount making my scope lose zero. and now that i look back, i dont understand how i couldnt see then that a $200 mount that will last longer than my rifle is a damn bargain. larue mounts are cheap in the end, even if i only use them on the range killing paper. it is worth putting back money for a few months (i saved for 6 months on my college budget) and buying larue, even if it is more expensive than the glass that will get put in it. |
| Since i own an ADM are we all saying they are inferior or knockoffs. I take my scope off to clean my rifle and it holds a zero. I really like the way my ADM looks but it is not the easiest to QR. I like the Larue style... it looks like you can get ahold of the "tabs" easier. Either way i like what i got and if i had mega bucks i would buy a SPR and a US optics scope while im dreaming. |
Mark, I got it from SOCOM Supply in Canada (the Canadian supplier of ADM stuffs), i think it was shipped by standard Canada post expedited. |
Trackin'. ![]() |
have i unleashed the hounds? ![]() I thought you knew whom the Canadian supplier of ADM stuff was, given your responce:
|
so you carry two scopes with your kit so you can quickly swap out optics? and i think you got that mixed up, now-a-days it should say "it doesn't have to be practical to be tactical". |
Whether it's jump shooting jack-rabbits with an Irondot in the morning, and that evening it's smoking crows out a 300 with a 16x ... or it's camo-ing your rifle with an CompM2 while in the streets, and then later from the hide dropping on the Mk4 Leupold ... it's now commonplace. ![]() |
and for those that don't shoot 3+ different scenarios per day with the same rifle and rarely change optics, 2-1/2 turns of a 1/4-28 or two isn't that big of a deal on the rare occasion they do. i would also be willing to make the same bet as the previous poster (i won't go as far as 99% but close) that the majority of shooters here only buy the qd mount because it is the cool thing to have and don't have any reason to take them off. i am sure there are a few but not many that have the coin to buy several of the qd mounts to make it work for each optic. i think there is a real market for non qd mounts but hey, it is your business and your choice to make them or not. i don't need one either way. |
I respectfully disagree with your characterization of the situation. But be advised, if it lends itself well to machining and gets within a rocket-shot of an AR ... ... then it's already "On The List". ![]() ML |
|
The modularity and diverse applications of the AR platform lend them to multi-optics set-ups, since a single optic cannot be best for all circumstances. Take for example a carbine that "normally" wears an ACOG or Aimpoint that one wants to do some ammo or suppressor POI shift testing from the bench where something like a higher power variable might be better suited. Or how about another example where one has multiple weapons, but cannot afford dedicated optics for each of them? Then there are things like NODs, lasers, and flashlights which are only employed part time. While I agree that there is certainly a place for fixed mounts, as is the case with my dialed in primary hunting rifle whose optics never get touched, QD mounts can also be very advantageous. Mark, do you have an ETA on the 660's? |
