I'm looking for a fairly quick to action scope for the range, home defense backup and quick shot ground hog rifle. I'm trying choose between these scopes: Millett DMS-1 $225 Millet zoom dot $300 Bushnell 4200 1.25-4x24 30mm tube $390 Leupold 1.25-4x20 European 30mm Riflescope $400 Weaver 1.5-4.5x24 Classic Extreme 30mm Rifle Scope $430 EO Tech 512 $400 Leupold 1.5-5x20 Mark 4 MR/T 30mm Riflescope $880 IOR 1.5-8x26 Tactical 35mm Rifle Scope $1370 Ideally, I would like a 1-8x26, with a circle-dot illum reticle, 1/2 MOA clicks, capless turrets, that will cowitness and costs $400 with the mount! I realize that is a bit unreal. If you have one of the listed optics, can you comment on it and the type of shooting you feel it works best for? |

I have the Eotech 512 and I love it. I use it on my bushmaster as my back up home defense (12 guage w/ buckshot primary). It is great fun at the range up to 100 yards, and I know the bushnell version of it is popular with hunters. If you look around you'll see it is quickly replacing the Aimpoint as a must have optic for CQB by SWAT and military. I've had it about a year and I still am enamored by it. Deadly accurate, large window size, and it moves around in the reticle so that no matter what angle you are looking at it, the red dot will destroy whatever you point it at. Also, it comes ready to mount on any standard rail. Not sure but I think most of the other optics you named require an additional mount. Only thing is that like other holographic red dots, it is only 1X so there is no magnification. That is why I saved up and got the 3X magnifier behind it which I can flip in or out of at will. I also have a fake Aimpoint made by Tasco and while obviously the quality is nothing near a real one, the little red dot is the same and I find it a little harder to find quickly in the window as opposed to the Eotech which has a halo around the red dot to help guide your eye quickly to your target. Good luck and have fun! |

How much faster are 1.5x variable scopes than like 3x variables? For my hunting rifle a 3x is fine for a low end, but I never get shots inside 25 yards. I want the 1x to be as fast or faster than open sights. I'm a little concerned about the cheekweld on a carbine stock. At this time, I plan to use a VLTOR Clubfoot Mod stock. I'm also wondering how my cheekweld is affected when I need to shorten the stock due to heavy clothing. That is part of what still makes me consider a red dot. The only trouble with a red dot is I would like great accuracy at 100+ yards. . .like under 1.5 ". |
You should still be very accurate with a red dot @ 100yd. But 200 or more is where the variable scope will shine. This is eveyone's problem. There is no single optic for all situations. But, the 1-4X or 1.5-5 comes closer than the red dots IMO. |

I really like the Leupold MR/T and the IOR 1.1-4x. A scope that I like a lot that is not on your list is the Trijicon 1.25-4x Accupoint. Also we have been selling a lot of the Leupold 1.5-5x MR/T and get a lot of good feedback. The guys that buy one let their buddies try out their setup and their buddies are calling us to get one. You will not be able to get a scope with any magnification to cowitness. As a newbie to optics of any kind I've been doing alot of reading so far. DMS-1: Looks great so far, only downfall is its size, looks to be a long sumbich. Easily end up doubling the price of the scope finding the right mount for you since it needs to be mounted so far forward. GRSC 1x6: Wish it was available, more magnification than the DMS, and less overall length. Price? Who knows, could easily jump right out of the picture if it ends up being too much more than the DMS sells for. Everything else I've looked at so far either is not illuminated or is out of the price range (I be po). Anything that does fall in my limited price range has gotten crappy reviews for quality, clarity, or just plain usefulness. Currently waiting on the Vortex Strikefire to be released (already have it on order), looks to maybe be the best of both worlds. Red dot speed, and it comes with an attachable 2x magnifier. CQB and the ability to reach out a bit further than any other red dot on the market without dropping dime on a magnifier and mount. Since I'm not in any hurry, I'll wait to see what the GRSC goes for after its released, if its too much I may end up trying the DMS. Figure the Vortex should serve well (after trying it out), but the DMS will allow for any long range fun. My eyes dont agree with those saying they dont need any magnification at 100 + yds. I can hit a man sized target at that range with irons, but hell if I can group, the peepers just aint up to it. |

To the folks with way more experience with the CQ environment. How does the US Optics SN4 stack up in this bunch? I am considering this for my next build. I realize the cost is over the top of all but one scope listed in the original post but one needs to ask the question. I am slowly entering waters I am unfamiliar with and would prefer to only have to make purchases once. |
I'm by no means an expert, but be careful about illumination. I'm not a huge fan of it. My reticle is illuminated in my Nikon rangefinder. Trouble is it washes out the item to be ranged! Dumb design. I have other illuminated scopes and they have this issue to a lesser extent. I turn it down enough to be ok in the early morning. Also, in my price range, illumination is never a guaranteed deal. Everything from the knob getting whacked and breaking to the battery going dead afflicts illumination. I like the idea of a backup reticle. My crossbow won't go without a reticle after struggling with a cheap red dot, but the lessons are the same. Now, I do like illumination's ability to bring your eye to center. Kind of like deer, we all want to go to the light! So that is a good thing. I too am waiting on the VORTEX. Looks like a good HQB(Home Quarters Battle) with a BUIS. |
