I own both... sort of. My Comp ACOG is a little different model. I would take the ACOG. It is a more useful scope in more conditions than the Leupold. I like the Leupold, but its big downwall is its dimly lit reticle and short battery life. The Comp ACOG has an excellent reticule that is always brightly lit. That combined with its small size and light weight put it way over the top for me.

The CQ/T is giant, its reticule is not as useful as the ACOG ot MR/t you are looking at. Battery life is still not so hot and its reticule never lights up very bright to begin with. Add to that the mount is terrible and the fact that it is huge (oh yeah I already said that).

Why spend that kind of money for GP/plinking?

Get A fuggin' Millet DMS.

I've owned every kind of optic you can imagine....

Since it sounds like you are not going to war any time soon, the Millet does everything you want it to do for a mere $250 bucks...

Spend the rest of your $1K on ammo.

Light-gathering between sundown and 30 minutes after is important to me.  I had a TA01 and didn't felt "blinded" after sundown.  What you are telling me is that the newer ACOGs are much better at low-light conditions than the Leupy?

Weight.  I'm trying to optimize for weight.  Doesn't have to make sense...its a personal challenge.  That's what happens to OCD people that have too many choices.

Eye relief on the ACOG he is asking about is actually quite comfortable.

Sad to say I have not shot at night with either of mine, but I can tell you neither one of these scopes have very large objective lenses to gather light. Having said that, the ACOG does have the larger objective lens for what thats worth.

Believe me, I know the feeling.

FWIW, I bought a DMS-1 and immediately sold my Leupy 1.5x5.

I didn't like the fact that the Leupy didn't go down to 1X... I never could get used to using it as a CQB optic. The SPR reticle is cool, but only if it would go down to 1X...

Also the Millet illumination knob is great and the Leupy sux.

Sorry for throwing my $.02 in.

If you want something light weight, get a J-Point.

Well either way, the human pupil only goes up to 7mm, so anything greater than that will be effective in low light, when compared to the naked eye.

1.9 inches?

I've never used this exact model but that seems tight, like most other ACOGS I've used.

All the numbers Trijicon lists for eye relief are on the low side in my experience. I would rate the eye relief on this model to about 3".

Related question on the TA33, since I'm considering getting one myself.
Is the BDC going to work with 55gr out of a 20in barrel?

The TA33 is calibrated for 62gr out of a 16in barrel right? According to the BDC chart other ACOGs like the TAO1 calibrated for the same work fine with 55gr out of a 20in barrel, so this will too right?

Because I'm getting old, I need magnification.

I love the TA33 (looking through it at gun shows) and I agree that the eye relief is more like 3".  ACOGs are, quite literally, bullet proof.  The reticle is excellent.  Sharp and bright and the weight is sweet.  Since it comes with its own mount, the price is comparable to the Leupy with a Larue LT-104.  I'm going to have to assume that the quality of the ACOG glass is "top shelf."

However, the Leupy is no slouch.  The weights are not that much different and if money becomes the issue, I can always get the VX-III, save $200, 6 oz, and have a better piece of glass than the tactical verson.  Either of the Leupy scopes look good on an AR.

Weights that I found --

TA-33   6.94
Leupold 15.0 (VX-III is 9.7)
Millet   18.0

Did I say that I already have an AimPoint in a LaRue mount?

Bullshit.  This is a TA33; the eye-relief is great.

Choose the TA33.  Light weight, rugged, BAC, BDC, clear high quality glass and great eye-relief.

I can sympathize as I just made the same decision myself.  I took the 1.5-5 MRT.  My reason was versatility with 1.5 and abundant eye relief for close targets and the ability to have more magnification and fine crosshairs for longer ranges. The lighted retical washing out in the sun was not a factor because you can see the black retical just fine.  In low light, just turn it on.

My thoughts were a 3X ACOG would be slower and more awkward for close or moving targets or rapid fire gaming (remember, I am a civilian).  Also, less magnification for long range or precise shooting especially since my eyes aren't great.

I don't think either is good for a police or military entry team going in houses (see the informative tagged post in AR discussions "LMT and short dot porn"

I think that anyone would be wrong to say you made a mistake with either optic. Its going to be personal preference.  There are worse choices in life to make!! Good luck.

A friend is letting me use his Leupy for the weekend.  It doesn't have the lighted reticle but it has the SPR reticle.  He got it used for a good price but he just picked up a semi rare Leupold fixed 3x and he is thinking he might let go of the 1.5 to 5.  Oh my.
