| I want to start of by saying this is my first post to this awesome site. I was recently infected with BGD (black gun disease). I recently purchased a rock river AR, my first. I have spent the last couple of days and numerous hours looking at this site and all the different options for these guns. The first thing I want to do is mount a scope.I have done numerous searches and cant find the info I want. I'm looking for some suggestions on a decent scope at a decent price. Im just starting off and dont want to spend alot of money on something that wont sute my needs.I plan on doing some hunting with this gun and would also like to keep the"military look". Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. |

First of all, welcome to the site. I hope that you skin is a little thick when visiting Gen. Discussion, but you'll easily fir in on the tech side. AS far as optics go, I have tried afew. here are my recommendations: CQB - close-in to 200 yds get an Eotech ($300=/-) 200 yds plus get a Super Sniper 10x (WWW.SWFA.COM) about $300 also If you are looking to spend less, and brother I don't blame you, look at: Short range - OKO long r\range - Bushnell I started with all the crappy optics years ago and after blowing money on the cheaper optics, I bought, sold, and traded until I ended up with the Eotechs and Super Snipers. In retrospect, I wish that someone else had told me just to hold out for the best compromise of quality, performance and price to begin with, it would have saved me time and money in the long run. Just my .02 and good luck |
Take the handle off and look at Leupold's VX-III 1.5x5 (~$400). There is a "tacticool" version but it is just a "hardened" VX-II. The VX-III is tough enough. It is used by heavy-recoil African game hunters so...I think it will take whatever you'll throw at it....and...it still looks cool. If you need anything beyond a 4x for hunting, you probably ought to be considering a heavier caliber and 3x9+. I know that everyone here can shoot the eye out of an eagle at a 1000 yards with a 5.56, iron sights, drunk and falling out of the back of a truck (and has done it several times), but...wounding an animal is a serious sin so...why not select the right tools for the job? |

My personal opinion and experiances, what some may tell you who have BRD Eotech is a great CQB, but limited to 200m Aimpoints are good CQB, with experinace and a good zero can be pushed to 325m, a 3x magnifier will magnify but there's no BDC build into it so most can generally see farther than they can shoot, you can kentucky windage the elevation if you are familure with the tragectory of what you're shooting though. I've seen 2 Aimpoints of litterally a thousand go down, I've seen them fall, ran over, thrown... you name it, the new Comp 4 has a 80k hour battery life off a AA, bit spendy but worth all the cost. ACOG / RCO's for the most part on the civilian side aren't worth you spending $1k+ they're great scopes from 100m to 800m and then some range past that, I hate them for anykind of CQB, they're litteraly Marine Proof and of the thousands I've seen, I can't remember one that was ever broke. optics are what you pay for them; there are a few entry levels that are great values, but not combat proof, so they're great for 90% of the population. Tasco makes a 6-24x42 mil-dot varmiter, that I've never heard a bad thing about, nor have I broke the one I have, although I've never taken it into combat either. There are a few name brand entry level 3-9x40 spopes in the $125-200 price range that are a great value, but not the super priced that you will see tons of pictures of here. For the most part, don't buy the walmart special, most optics hold thier value to a degree, if you don't bang them up, which most people don't. |

YMMV, but based on Sniper Country recommendations I recently purchased a Falcon 1.5 x 5 scope, (see it here: www.falconoptics.com/menace1.5-5x30.php) This is an excellent optic which saved me quite a few bucks over the Leupy 1.5 x 5 VX III recommended above - I really like it and especially the price, which from R.L. Gunsmithing was only $275.... Sweet red and green dot options w/ this item and crystal clear optically IMHO. Ya might check it out. mike eta - BTW, the tacked threads above also has excellent information on this subject and should not be overlooked, lots of pics and too many options to mention here |
Sweet but is it really 17.7 ounces? |
1.345 pounds sounds about right - to be honest I didn't weight it. mike ps - for a scope that comes with no markings whatsoever, no brand name only a model and serial number (0010 btw) I was and am very impressed with this little scope - just what I wanted for my 6.8mm AR deer slayer |
