One of my local dealers had one of these mounted on s used gun a week ago...

I told him it was counterfeit and he told me "prove it." I told him to call leupold with the S/N:

He did... It went in the trash and the guy who sold it is no longer welcome in his store (Even though I doubt he knew he was buying Chinese junk)

I was a gunshow last year I think, maybe 06.  A guy was challenging people to look through a real one, and his fake one and tell the difference.  A buncha fudds were standing around and couldn't.  A guy "in the know" with us looked through em and spent about 5 minutes telling the guy how bad his fake was and listing all the differences.  That dealer challenging my friend to tell em apart probably cost him a grand in lost sales right there.

The fakes are freeking obvious to anyone that's used Leupold glass.

The one I saw had backwards turrets with adjustments that were all mudy and didn't click right. The glass threw all kinds of reflections inside the scope and the edges looked distorted with a really dark color shift. When the magnification was maxed, the FOV was about half the size it should have been.

Anybody that says that the fakes are "equivalent" or even  "usable" is full of shit.

Too many people think outward appearance has some relation to performance in optics.

I bought a nock off for fun and to just see what it was like.  You are right it does not have the same quality optics as a leopold.  I put it on my 308 and wanted to test the turrets out.  It has about 80 moa of adjustment total.  I zeroed at 100, reset the turrets, and shot 100 to 600 yards of moa adjustment at the 100 yard target and back to 100yd zero.  I about crapped my pants.  It returned to zero.  The adjustments were on all the way to 600yds as well.  Granted I didn't actually shoot that far.  Just measuring on paper at 100.  I might put it on my 50BMG just for fun and see if it will work or fall apart.  For a cheap scope I hate to say it but I can't complain.  It shocked me.

I have a Leupold Mk4 look-alike too (no infringing trademarks), and it's typical decent Chinese quality.  That is, it's better than the $30 NCStar scopes, but it's nowhere near as good as a $160 Burris.

The AO adjustment has about 1/10th turn of slop, and the turrets were full of brass shavings when I took it apart to check it out (from the manufacturing process, not from wear).  The diopter adjustment adjusts well, but is very loose and changes easily when handling the scope.  Internally, it's not very well blackened, and has a fair bit of internal reflections.  The scope caps that came with it don't fit very well.  The glass is not bad, but not great.  I haven't used it a whole lot yet, but will compare it to a real Mk4 for repeatability and accuracy when I get a chance.

Aside from that, it's fine!

Yeah, but when the bad guys think you have a high quality scope you wont even have to fire a shot they will be so scared. Not only will you save in the cost of the scope, but in the cost of ammo and service life of your weapon as well Remember kids, GI Joe says, looking cool is half the battle....

A tried to tell a coworker that he bought a chinese knock off MK4 complete with the Leopold name but no serial number.  he was told it was a military over run so that's why it wasn't sn'd.  I pulled up the link from snipers hide pointing out the telltales.

he wasn't convinced.

O well, not my money.  On the plus side he didn't pay near what a real lepold would go for.
