Howdy all. Anyone have any information on or used a MARS sight? www.defense-update.com/products/m/MARS-sight.htm A friend of a fellow at work has one for sale. I already have an Aimpoint, and was wondering if the MARS is any good or an improvement over the Aimpoint. I tried the search functions and came up empty. Thanks! Doc H. |
| Compared to a eotech, they are teh suck. Reminds me of a russian Kobra sight w/laser built in. If I were in the IDF and issued a MARS, Id tuck it away and use my personal Aimpoint instead. The MARS might be worth having if your unit didnt issue PEQ-2's and you had the version with IR instead of visible laser for night ops, bout it. |

I have the "IR" version, but I also have a set of PVS-7D's to go with it, so it works out very well. Through NVG's the IR laser is very visible and easy to pick up, perfect if you plan on doing a night fire. The advantage is that you don't have to line your NVG's with the sight on the rifle or mount them on the rifle(if you had a monocular), you just press the button and use it like a typical laser sight, the obvious advantage is that no one without NVG's can see the laser. The red dot sight and the laser co-witness and you can adjust the size, the brightness automatically adjust and is very visible. I have used the sight outdoors and indoors with no problems at all. It also has throw levers so you can take it on and off quickly, if needed. Now for the downside, the first being that the sight sits up too high to use iron sights with on an AR-15 is the biggest draw back for me, this sight was not designed for an AR-15. The second being the amount of cash most people that have one will want for it makes it unreasonable and if you don't have NVG's it makes it a waste of money IMHO. The third I would have to say would be the battery life, it takes only 1 AA battery that won't last aslong as the two in the EOTech. Now if your one of those people that likes to show off your equipment at the range then have at it. If you don't have NVGs or it is not the IR version I would say not to buy it(unless for some reason you want to buy NVGs), on gunbroker some one has one for sale, the buy it now price is $2300, and the current amount is $995 as of now and you could probably get it as I don't think anyone will bid on it becuase most people don't know what it is. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=87328487 Hope this was helpful and if you have any other questions email me: [email protected] -Colt |

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if the version this guy is selling had the visible or the IR laser. Either way I don't think I'm interested, since as I said, I already have an Aimpoint. He wanted $400 for it. The story is that his Guard unit bought a bunch OTS, then were told they could not keep them as they were not part of the TO&E, so they got "rid" of them by letting the individual unit members keep them. Sounds kind of , but this is third-hand from a guy I work with.FWIW, Doc H. |
