The CompM series is the latest.  I'm not sure if they are even making the C's anymore.  The designations are:

CompM  (Compatible with Nightvision)
CompML (Not compatible with Nightvision)

The latest is the CompM4 and has an integrated mount and runs off AA batteries.  The CompM3/ML3 and CompM2/ML2 are a bit older, but still heavily fielded.  They run off N batteries.  You can get them in either 2 or 4MOA dots.  They also require a seperate mount.

The Comp M3/ML3 have a longer battery life and come in either a 4  MOA or 2 MOA dot. The Comp M2/ML2 still have a have a very long battery life. The Comp ML2-2x (2 power magnification) has a 2MOA dot.

And the new M4 I’m told is more robust especially in the battery and switch compartment.

I have a Comp C3 4MOA, I see no disadvantages, works great calling Coyotes.
I don't dive either, or shoot Carp.

I have a CompC and a CompML2 - both have 4MOA dots.
The "M" models can withstand greater water depths and more extreme temperatures
than the "C" models.  Apart from that, they function identically...

There are a few other cosmetic differences...
The CompC doesn't come with flip-up lense covers, and doesn't come with
the little rubber strap thingy that connects the battery and adjustment cap covers.
However, the CompC does come with a single 30mm ring - but if you are mounting
on AR, that ring is useless because it's too low.

Ill just sit it in a larue mount anyway.

do any dealers currently stock the comp C?

The "CompC" is an older model which is now discontinued.
The "CompC3" is currently available from several vendors...
ADCO firearms has them.  So does midwayusa...

The CompC3 goes for about $375...  I would recommend spending
the extra 20 bucks and buy the CompML2.

Can someone help and enlighten me or what the difference is?

Those numbers refer to the size of the dot...
A 4 MOA dot will appear to be as large as a circle 4 inches in diameter
placed 100 yards away from you.  A 2 MOA dot will be a 2 inch circle...

The M series and C series have been around for the same amount of time.  The M series is beefed up.

M is for military such as Comp M, Comp MX, Comp M2, Comp M3, Comp M4

An L added in the model name means no nightvision.

The C series has most of the same models respectively (Comp C, Comp C2, Comp C3 etc...)
