posted this is troubleshooting as well but hoping for more viewers in this one........sorry if that was wrong

I tried to search this with little luck....but 'er goes....

My brand new DPMS AP4 16" Carbine has been sighted in and the rear sight is all the way to the left. It is the typical removable carry handle sight.

Is this an issue or will it be in the future? It seems that the rifle is sighted in just fine, plenty accurate for my taste, but I read somewhere that this should be fixed, is that a good suggestion or internet speculation?

Didn't think too much about it until I mounted the carry handle scope mount and a red-dot. Now I can't see half of the front post b/c of the sight being so far left - I see the side of the "see thru" mount.

FYI - I called DPMS and they say send it in. First they say just the carry handle itself, then after a call back with my questioning how that could find the problem, they suggested the entire upper. Now, I don't like the idea of my baby leaving home at such an ealry age, but will if need be (obviously if it is needed).

thanks for any replies....

Typically, this is a symptom of either a canted front sight base or a barrel that was torqued to the point that the index pin either sheared or gouged the index pin slot.  In the former situation, some people have had some success using a mallet to move the FSB.  In the latter case, you'd need to disassemble the upper and assess the problem.

However, if it's zeroed in and shooting fine, then it's not really an issue beyond the cosmetic.

What ammo were you useing? Just a thought but on my XM177 when I shot Federal 50 grn from Wal Mart I had the same isue. Shooting M855 it was almost at mechanical zero. Not sure what the difference was. I also removed the barrel, and the front sigt block (for a different reason) and the zero was the same after I reassembled.

Thanks for the replies....

Cosmetically, I don't mind so much. I just didn't know if later on I'd be wishing I had it fixed.....or if there was a barrel problem....would I be able to see anything specific with the naked eye? I haven't noticed a canted FSB.

Ammo was a combo of Remington and Wolf. Both seemed pretty equal on the paper. I believe we started sighting it in with the Remmington thinking quality would be better than the Wolf.

Thanks again fellas.

You CAN try a couple things before you call Fedex , and NO you don't need a BFH.
(Big F*** Hammer )

First , make sure both the front and rear sights are clean and undamaged, and that your
carry handle is solidly attached.

Now you need to set the sights at Mechanical Zero

You might want to download the Military Field Manual.

FM 3-22

The next step is to set a "Battlesight zero" , and then attempt to sight in at the range.

If you have any problems with any of these steps, there MAY be something
wrong with your rifle.

Thank you AKsRule, especially for the field manual download...Will definitely give that a look.

Thanks for the sighting tip - will check that this weekend.....
