Neewby to optics.....Is it possible to mount an Aimpoint in front of my carry handle. I plan to install LaRue free floating handguard and thought I could mount it on the LaRue. If I did, what co-wittness would I end up with? I've looked everywhere and couldn't find any pics of a set up like this. I really like my carry handle, but I don't want to mount my optics on top of it. I have a Bushmaster M4A3 carbine. Also, is it possible to move my front fixed sight forward and install a 9" Larue handguard instead of a 7"?....and what would be involved? Thanks |

If it's a fixed carry handle, I'd suggest a gooseneck type mount. ARMS makes a pretty slick one. Here This will actually give you a co-witness with your irons. There is another more simple version of this mount, but I can't seem to find a link. Check in the EE and I bet you could find one of these for a good price. You could also use this ring mount from ARMS. -Here- It doesn't co-witness, but does have a hole through the mount so you can still use your irons. While I don't like ARMS throw levers mounts, I still think these are the best carry handle mounts you can get. If you have a detachable carry handle, just forgo mounting optics to it, and mount directly to your flattop. |
| Nope, I was thinking of attaching the Aimpoint right to the top of the LaRue FF handguard (one reason I decided on a strong quality FF handguard). I like my detachable carry handle, and don't want to really remove it. I didn't think that this idea was so far out there until I started to look for someone else who did the same thing. If the Aimpoint has zero eye relief then I can mount it as far forward as I care to, right? In fact, I read somewhere (?) that it can be benificial to mount a red dot further out, it gives you a greater range of overall sight (CQB). Besides why waste a perfectly good carry handle and sights? I could still have a functional carry handle and red dot without being in the way of the carry handle. Maybe a cantilever mount of the handguard.....I'm thinking a 2/3 co-witness would be the best......a true co-witness with fixed sights might be too busy. Any thoughts? |
I’ve never personally set up my optics like that, and Mr. Wilson does make a valid point about balance. But, I think it’s doable as long as you don’t load up your rifle making it front heavy. Only way to know for sure is to try it out for your self. If it doesn’t work for you, you still have the option of removing the CH, mounting the Aimpoint to the upper, and either going with fixed style BUIS, or you could even chop your CH converting it to a CCH BUIS. With a CCH or other type of fixed BUIS you will still have the same sight picture you would have with the optic mounted out on the HG’s. We all have different expectations and uses when we add optics and accessories and I will not criticize a guy for how he sets up his weapon. It is after all his and he must know what works best for himself. Also, don’t get caught up in the “It doesn’t look cool crowd.” |
