Guys,

If your elevation clicks are quarter minute of angle, then you will need to quadruple the number of clicks (8/3, -12) as the original RIBZ was based on the standard A2 rear sight having one minute of angle elevation clicks.  (The number of clicks are doubled for the carry handle sight.)

Molon,

Great post.  The instructions are very clear, so much so that even I can attempt it, lol.  I do have a question for you, though.  I just bought a Colt 6920.  Will your RIBZ work with the 16" barrel, or is it just for a 20" AR?  Thanks.

My question:  With the mid length system, should I expect any notable differences in clicks when adjusting for range after I set zero following RIBZ procedure?

I would think that because the mid-length's sight radius (17.5" I believe?) is between that of a carbine (14.5") and a rifle (20") that I could probably use the settings for a carbine to adjust for range with minimal error.  Unfortunately, I rarely have the opportunity to get to the range, let alone a rifle range.  If somebody could offer there experience using the RIBZ with a mid-length platform, I would be grateful.

I have edited my post on the previous page to reflect the values for a 17.25" (midlength) sight radius.

I'll assume you're referring to a 16" barrel with a carbine sight radius and carry handle rear sight, since you didn't state otherwise.  Theoretically, it should work even better than with a 20" barrel because the amount of elevation created with each click of the rear sight due to the carbine sight radius will bring you closer to the actual amount of elevation difference between a 50 yard zero and a 100 yard zero (which is approximately 1.4 MOA.)  Two clicks up from a 100 yard zero with a carbine sight radius raises the elevation by 1.3 MOA.

I haven't personlly tried this, as I usually zero my carbine iron sights at 50 yards and call it a day.  If you give it try, please report back and let us know how it worked out for you.

Yes, I meant a 16" barrel with a carbine length sight radius.  Sorry for the missing info  :)

I'll see what kind of fun I can have with it this holiday weekend.  My primary goal is a 50 yard zero on the Troy BUIS.  If I get that accomplished and still have ammo left over, I'll slap on the A3 carry handle and see what happens.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Molon,

I used the RIBZ on my 6920 with removable carry handle which is 6/3 and it worked fine.  The front post didn't need to be moved much compared to the way it came from Colt.  My buddy did his 6920 as well.

Thanks Molon - Great job.

Any chance of getting you to post a graph of what trajectory looks like with a 250 meter zero?

Ok, I have read these battle sight zero posts until I am blue in the face. I want to sight in at 25 meters. I mostly want to shoot at 100 yards for now. I have a carry handle with 1/2 clicks, so I will set the 6/3 -8 from the bottom.

1. what setting to sight in at 25 meter target?

2. what setting to shoot at 100 yards?

3. the 6/3 setting will be zeroed from 50-250 yards?

4. the Z setting will be?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply

Molon,

Just recieved a sr15 with the 2-600 meter buis.
How should I set this up?
I want to have a poi at 25 yards, but am unsure which number to use.  It should be the 200 meter right?  Thanks.

I'm going to assume you are referring to the KAC 200-600 meter BUIS.  I zero mine for an Improved Battlesight Zero by zeroing point of aim equals point of impact at 50 yards with the sight set at "2" (200 meters).  If after zeroing in this method, you wish to change to a point of aim equals point of impact at 25 yards, simply rotate the sight drum to 1-2 clicks  past the "z" mark (depending upon variables) .

1. what setting to sight in at 25 meter target?

It all depends on what zero you are trying to obtain.

2. what setting to shoot at 100 yards?

For a point of aim equals point of impact zero at 100 yards use the 6/3, -6 setting on the carry handle sight.

3. the 6/3 setting will be zeroed from 50-250 yards?

No, the 6/3 setting will give you a 300 meter battlesight zero.

4. the Z setting will be?

The "z" setting is used to obtain a 300 meter battlesight zero at the field expedient distance of 25 meters.

Thanks for helping me get a better understanding of this. Not going to battle, so the type of zero isn't a big issue. Just wanting to have a good place to start using the 25 meter target for zeroing and then knowing where to go from there with the adjustment at a given yardage. I will try to get out tomorrow and give it a shot.

Molan, thanks again for all the time you take to help us all out here.

Molan, your original post at the start of the thread says -3 clicks for 100 yards.

On the recent reply you say -4 clicks with carry handle. I have 1/2 clicks so do I go -8 ?

As of right now I have my 6/3 set  at -8. If I use a 50 yard target do I set my sight at 6/3 -4? That would be four half clicks...

Thanks again,
Glen

My mistake, you are absolutely correct!  The original post on the first page is correct.  Sorry for all my mistakes on this page.  With your carry handle sight, you will need to use the 6/3, -6 setting for 100 yards. (Man I need to get some sleep tonight.)

Molan, the weather here in Eastern Washington finally lightened up and I got the chance to make it out to the range. I was surprised that I didn't need to raise my front sight up all that much to get things zeroed. Set the rear on the "Z" and target at 25 meters. -4 hit the 50 yard and -6 the 100 yard. Set it at the 6/3 and clobbered the gongs out at 200+ yards and set it on the "4" and hit the 400 yard gong. Thanks for all your help. What a kick in the pants!

Maybe I  missed it, but, using the RIBZ with a detatchable handle, shouldn't you move the index ring 7 clicks clockwise, not 8?  With the A2 handle, the 4th click is for buffer zone.  So why would you need 2 buffer zone clicks with the detatch handle?  Make sense to move the 3 (double to 6) then one more for "buffer zone"?

If you examine multiple detachable carry handle rear sight assemblies with the half MOA elevation clicks, you’ll see that not all of them have complete clearance between the bottom of the sight assembly and the carry handle with just one half MOA click as a buffer.  The extra click is just a little added insurance to make sure that you have complete clearance.  Naturally, if your particular sight assembly has complete clearance at -7 clicks, then you’re good to go.

I went to the range with my new CMMG MOD4  for the first time today.  I did all the RIBZ prep work before hand, but within just a few shots I was on paper at 50 yds. and inching closer to what I wanted.  My rear sight ( removable carry handle ) is pegged most of the way to the left to get me centered on the target.  When I got home I checked, and sure enough, the FSB is canted a little to the left.  It was frustrating at the range, I thought it was me, but It was mostly the canted FSB (  OK, I'll take a little credit for first time shooting with this rifle ).  I didn't have a chance to shoot further today, but hopefully next time I'll be able to zero faster when I get my fixed upper back from being fixed at the factory and get over to the 100 yd range.  I even shared the RIBZ theory with another guy shooting his Bushmaster today.  I refered him to this forum page.

This has been probably the single most useful thread I've read

I'm planning on getting a RRA NM rifle.  I would have gotten the A4 version, except after reading this thread, it looks like detachable handles have only enough thread for 600 yards while the A2 attached handle can do 800 yards.  Does anyone know what max range is for A4 NM sights?

Also, Molon, what software are you using to get those charts?

Thanks!

I'd just like to chime in and say thanks for all the good info in this thread.

I used the RIBZ when sighting in my BCM middie with LMT rear sight.  Easy sight in at 50yds and then checked the 100yd zero - it was great.  Then we moved back to 290yds (that's what it lased) and did some shooting at a 7x12" steel plate.  The 300yd setting worked very well.  I was hitting the plate about 50% with the iron sights, and the other 50% were inside the frame that the plate was hanging on.  I'm very satisfied with the upper, the sight and the RIBZ.

First off, thanks a ton for writing up this guide.

If I sight in and adjust my front post at 50 yards on the 50 yard setting, can I switch to the 100 yard setting and not have to adjust the front sight post at 100 yards?  Basically what I'm asking is do I only have to adjust the front sight post once.

Nice post.  Very informative.

Im breaking out my carry handle as we speak to go and put this zero on it.

Just to clarify (I have been taking notes but want to make sure I got this correct)

Using the carry handle that is 6/3 Double click

1.  With the allen wrench I go -8 Clicks Clockwise ? (Correct?)

2.  This leaves me 2 click bufferzone (1 full click on other sites)

3.    -6 clicks is my 100 POI yard Zero

4.   -4 Clicks is Improved Battle Zero and my new 50 yeard POA Zero

5.   Standard 300 Yard Zero is still 6/3 setting

6.   Anything beyond 300 yards (highly unlikely for me) works the same as it would if I never changed the site with the allen wrench and did the BSZero

I previously did the reqular IBSZero and did my carry handle -4 clicks (-2 equiv.)
All I got to do is re loosen it and do 4 more clicks clockwise and resight correct?

Thanks .  For helping me understand this.  I think I have it grasped but want to make sure so I dont do it wrong

Great thread Molon!

Okay, stupid question time:

I have a Colt LE6920 (16", carbine sight radius, 6/3) and want to do the RIBZ at 100 yards as the local state range is 100 yards.  What zero target should be used (the blue 100-yarder PDF you posted for the 20"/fixed sights?)?  If, for some reason, I only have access to a 50 yard range, do I use your 20" 50 yard target for...standard IBZ zeroing of my 6920 at 50 yards with the corresponding lessening of clicks (6/3 -4)?

If I do a regular IBZ, do I zero with the standard military carbine 25m zero targets placed at 50 yards or use something altogether different?

If I do a regular IBZ, do I zero with the standard military carbine 25m zero targets placed at 50 yards or use something altogether different?

Mike

Good questions actually.  Because the carbines have a shorter sight radius, each click of elevation and windage will produce a larger amount of movement in the point of impact than the rifle length sight radius AR-15s.  You could use the 20" targets realizing that you are going to have more movement than the dashed lines on the target indicate.  A better solution would be a target with dashed lines specifically corresponding to the carbine sight radius.  I'll see if I can put together such a target.

Thank you, I appreciate it.  I know the IBZ states that you zero IAW the military instruction with a few exceptions once you modify the knob adjustment, but it doesn't say what zero targets to use.  The 25m military M4 carbine zero target has a scaled 300m silhouette that is meant to be displayed at 25m.  Obviously, if moved to 50 yards vice 25 meters, the 300m scaled silhouette would be out of scale for the range.  You posted the 20" 50 and 100 yard targets earlier, so it got me thinking.

Any updated targets?  I'm going to zero tomorrow with the 20" if not (should work, like you said, with maybe some extra trial and error).
