I mounted a new M4 Aimpoint last week. The battery is still good as of this morning.

I entered the install date in my Palm to keep track of longevity.

I'll get back to you in 2012 and give an update on the battery life.

If you do really have one

let me know all about it

how dose it compare to my OLD ML2

Is the lens even better?

Yes. I really do have a new M4.

I can't compare it to the old ML2 because I never had one of those. This is my first Aimpoint.

I haven’t fired the weapon with the M4 yet because we had a ton of rain in the last two weeks and the target area of my range is a sea of mud. Once it dries out some I’ll give it a workout.

I have the CompM4 on my PS90's and it's my first Aimpoint (because I use AA's for the rest of my gear so the battery type kept putting me off until now) so I can't give you a direct optics quality comparison w/earlier Aimpoints. However, it appears to be a good evolutionary (instead of revolutionary) upgrade to the earlier models as it's "good to go" right out of the box w/o having to buy separate rings & mount. One little improvement I like is that the rotary brightness control has a nice index line for a quick visual reference as to the appx brightness setting. If you already have an M2/M3 that you're happy w/then IMHO the M4 isn't really worth upgrading to but I prefer it to the M2/M3 for my particular needs.

Some of the stuff I have read suggested that there is a cantilever spacer for the mount, but nobody actually seems to have one for sale.  Is that something that has just not come out yet?

I need the cantilever so I can mount more crap on my receiver.

Given that it won't do anything my M2 won't do, I can't justify the extra cost.  In fact, I'm not sure why they are so expensive.

1. It runs on a AA

2. battery life is 80,000 hours

Will your M2 do that?

Does my M2 need to do that?  At what point does it just not matter anymore?  I can buy 50 batteries for $200.  Of course, I'd never need them since the M2 will go several years on one.  For that matter, I could buy the M3 w/Larue mount, if I just had to have a 2 MOA dot, and still save $150 or so.

Bought my second AIMPOINT a ML2 back in 2001 and STILL on the same battery

The M4 seems to BE MORE WATER PROOF compared to MY ML2

IM SO GLAD they come with mount

I Replaced my QRP mount with a LARUE CANTILEVER that mount is pretty solid and REPEATS zero perfectly

As I mentioned earlier, if you're already happy w/your M2 then there's no reason to upgrade. However, the M4 comes out of the box w/a decent riser & QD mount, ARD killflash & covers. Final price difference isn't all that great (M3 comparison) when you add in all the goodies (M4's are running about $625).

The M3 with Larue mount and Killflash runs $576.  If the M4 is truly ~$625, then upgrading may not be worth it, but initial purchase might be.  Is the pricing I am seeing on everyone's websites for the M4 MAP?  They all have it for $702.

$702 is MAP.  I recently got a M4 for $620. Several dealers were quoting simliar prices.

I have a ML2 & it is hard to justify the upgrade, but I have more money than sense.

I like being being able to leave the M4 at a normal daytime setting & never have to worry for well over a couple of years about the battery.  I did have a year old batt. in ML2 go out on me at the range (not a big deal – carried a spare with the rifle).  The battery life on the ML2 at a daytime setting appears to be closer to an EOTech (on lithium batt) - 1000-1500 hrs. That has been my experience on the battery life for the ML2 & I have heard other say the same

The M4 appears to be more durable (time will tell) – one piece body & mount, protective ears for elevation & windage, & supposely power knob redesigned to be more durable.

Finally, my ML2 had a 4MOA dot & I wanted to try the 2 MOA.

DeMarcus Nice setup.

The M4 are really nice red dot sites.  As for the price difference an M3 with a high quality mount like you get with the M4 you are not going to be looking at a big difference.  The M4 Quick Detach Rail Mount is the way to go to get return to zero.

If you are running an M2 or M3 and it is working just fine for you, you do not need to sale it and get an M4.

Includes: KillFlash Anti-reflection Device, AR15/M16 Spacer, QRPII Quick Detach Rail Mount, & Military Style Rubber Covers. On one AA battery you will get over 8 years of continuous (day and night) used at setting 12 and over 3 years at setting 13. Typically 500,000 hours at NVD setting. Length: 5.3”, Width: 3”, Height: 2.8”, Weight: 14oz, 16 setting 7 NV and 8 daylight

I think you have to contact the dealers for the "real" pricing as Aimpoint is hardline about advertised pricing.

I got mine from JKiser.  Here's his ad: Ampoint CompM4

Also, I'll borrow one of his photos to show the QRP2 mount:

From Aimpoint website: "QRP2 mount has twice the clamping force of the original QRP, and the mounting knob is wider and shorter to improve operation, and lessen the chance of becoming snagged on other gear."

I didn't understand the QRP2 until I handled one.  It is like a gas cap on cars - just tighten until it clicks twice and it is secure & you can't overtorque.

Rotate the knob counterclockwise to remove, clockwise 2 full "clicks" to attach. I haven't heard anything about a LaRue for the M4 yet.

I have a question (related to being a lefty) for those who have an M4 model or have intimate knowledge about them:

The M2/M3 series Aimpoints are able to be rotated so the battery tube/brightness knob is on the opposite side of the shooters face...ie: for the righties, the knob/tube is on the right side of the Aimpoint and for lefties, it is rotated over to the left side.

Can you do this with the Comp M4?

Based on the pictures I have seen, the answer appears to be NO.

Any help is appreiciated.

I suspect - though I have no evidence - that Aimpoint is probably working on a competitor to the ELCAN Spectre DR somewhere in its skunk/wunderworks.  While I think the M4's improvements are an evolutionary step forward, I'll stick w/ my M3.  Works fine & is L/R reversible.  M3 battery life is a non-issue w/ D-cells, though the M4's AA-compatibility is probably a smart move.  I still prefer throw lever mounts, but that's just a personal preference.

No, unfortunately, but it does mean you don't have to worry about slippage within rings or correct alignment.

Very clear glass
Better dot, especially for longer than 50 yard shots
Mount is solid and seems to be Joe proof.
