| I have just read the posting from ArmedFF have have a similar question for those with some experience with an ACOG. I am considering upgraded from an EOTech to an ACOG. However, I really like the quick open field of view with the EOTech. Therefore, I was thinking about spending the extra money and getting a Doctor on top of an ACOG. Here lies my problem. Is the extra money worth it or is the ACOG quick enough on the short range targets that the money would be a waste. I know that the ACOG works great for 100 yrds and out but wasn't sure how it worked inside of that. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks. |
From 0-100 yards, nothing beats an EOTech or Aimpoint for speed. ACOGs are better past 100 yards due to magnification and with both eyes open and using the BAC concept. So if you know the distances you are shooting at, the answer is a little easier. |
| Both, in close and out around 100-200 yards etc. I want the best of both worlds. That was why I was curious about the ACOG in close. I'm very happy with the EOTech in close- I personally don't think you can beat it but wanted to know how close the ACOG was to the EOTech at close distances. If it isn't that good in close, my theory was to spend the extra and get a Docter on top for the benefit of the open glass with a red dot set up. Thanks. |
| Been there. I just almost purchased a TA31DOC (credit card # was even entered into the check out area). My problem was that I wanted a scope, were the ACOG would have been great, I was back and forth about the 50yrs and closer. This is what lead me to the TA31DOC. I ended up with an EO TECH. This just made the most scense for me , my application. The next build will be scoped with an ACOG and be dedicated to 100 + yrd shooting. Just didnt want to spend the extra $$ to have a red dot on my scope (nothing against the people who have TA31DOC's, Im sure they love them). You could always buy the ACOG you want and if your are happy with it leave it be, if your not happy buy the DOT and attach it. |

I've got both an Eotech and an ACOG TA31DOC. BAC works ok up close, and the Doctor works well up close, but NOTHING using the ACOG is as fast or natural up close (0-50, maybe 0-100 meters) as the Eotech. The BAC method takes away almost half your field of view, and using the DOC requires a switch to a "chin-weld" position. plus, the height of the Doctor requires some different hold over at short ranges. That all being said, the TA31DOC is a sweet setup, but if I only could have one for a variety of (typical) shooting situations, it would be the EoTech. Now, if the majority of my shooting was out over 100 meters with just an occasional close range need, the TA31DOC is hard to beat. If I needed a do-all ranges scope, I would go with something adjustable like the new Elcan, or a short dot. YMMV. |
| It isn't natural to drive a car either, it too is an acquired skill. If you buy a BAC equipped ACOG, make sure you allocate the range time and ammo for practice. It shouldn't be a square range, to effective train yourself in its use, you need to be able to move around, track and shoot at targets in different distances. |
