I saw the other day that Aimpoint won a contract with these.  Anyone know the details on them?  Thanks.

They obtained a contract with the Army.  The M4 has an integral mount and uses a AA battery as requested by the Army.  Battery life equals the shelf life of a AA battery.

I have two ML3's w/3x magnifier.  If the Army has gone from the 1/3N, DL1/3N, 2L76, or CR1/3N, to the AA, somebody screwed up.  With just the addition of the two battery capacity (1 in the device, one in reserve), the Aimpoint has 100,000 hrs. capability of continuous use, at setting 7 or less.  With the M3, and better low light capability for use with night vision devices, battery life is also extraordinary.  So, why down grade capabilities?  Tooth to tail would indicate that the 3 volt lithium batteries should be better...  If I'm wrong, please explain...

Thanks,

Carter

I think that it has something to do with the AA being more commonly available that the 1/3N.

It's funny because the new Eotech 553 was designed at the behest of SOCOM to run of CR123's in order to help standardize the types of batteries operators need to carry.  It doesn't really help, though, because NODS still run AA's.

The Pentagon just needs to pick a type of battery they will use and put out a general memo to all GSA contractors that they will only buy gear that runs off that battery system from now on.  It would take time, but the old gear would be phased out and eventually, little things like batteries would become streamlined.
