Hi guys, I'm new to the black rifle so be easy.  I have an M4 on the way and have been thinking about the config I want to pursue.  I'm pretty much wanting to keep it simple/light for close quarters combat stuff and have decided I like the Eotech....but, after reading a ton of threads I see they're coming out with a new product with magnification.

What's your opinion?  Should I wait and get the new product with magnification or do you think it's even a player for what my config plan is for this M4?  I don't see myself using this rifle to shoot over 100yards.

Thanks in advance.

Evening

Well if it is a CQB rifle that you are configuring I don't see the need for magnifiation.  What you want is to be able to see your target clearly at close range and a magnified optic is going to throw you off.   Some of the guys I talk to don't even bother with the little red dot in the eotech and just frame the guy in the hood opening.

If you think you might have to engage targets farther out then maybe a set up with a separate magnifier, like the aimpoint, on a flip mount would be better.  I have mine set up with the eotech and I'll probably get the add on eotech magnifier when it comes out.

Just get the EOTech.  There is no need for magnification at those distances.

regular eotech is fine out to 300 meters with the improved battlesight zero. If you think you will spend more than alittle time past that distance get the 553 that can be upgraded later.

Get one now.  Magnification would just make it harder to acquire close targets, the dot is only 1 MOA and is precise enough to accurately engage distant targets.

Well I've decided to get one but what pisses me off is these vendors out on the broker will not answer questions, at least not in a timely fashion.  I've emailed 3-4 of them today looking for dates of manufacture on the units they're advertising and received back zero responses on any of the new ones.  Did get a reply from someone selling a used one but not really what I was after.

Are you talking about Gunbroker?

Buy from a vendor here!  Or on the Equipment Exchange.

Yes I was referring to Gunbroker.

I'm totally open to buying from a site supporting vendor but I don't even know where to start  in regard to which vendor carries them.  I've clicked on to a couple of ad sites but no EoTechs.  Remember, I'm a newbie gun nutt so I'm not a full-stride on the board/within the community.

Any vendor recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Try Talon Arms, Rainier Arms, PK Firearms, CS Gunworks, ADCO, or a host of others.  All of those carry EOTechs.

Or try searching the equipment exchange for a deal.

Aim Surplus just made me a great deal on a Eotech 552.   I trust them, and have bought from them before.  Deal with them.

I would try and snag a 552 for starters, or at least the AA battery ones. I have a model 551 and 552 rev F and I am very happy with both. The 551 using alkaline N-Type batteries has a very short battery life, like around 200 hours. The AA gets about 1100 in comparison. Most people get the lithium batteries because they last much longer, and handle temperature extremes the best. I have put a few thousand rounds through each of mine and they are super great at 50 yds, and great at 100 yards, once you have the zeroed rifle tweaked. I also suggested a model that has NV capability. I did that because it is really not that much more in price, and eventually the better gen II and III stuff will be much more affordable and you never know in the future if those few more dollars spent was worth it. I already have NV stuff, so that influenced my purchases.
Combat proven sight, tough, reliable and I love the amount of adjusting of the reticle as compared to my Aimpoint CompM3. But I also love that Aimpoint.
IMO, I did not, nor do I need magnification to put that 1 MOA dot on a small target at 100 yds. I would say skip the wait, it may be a waste of time.

I recommend the 512 unless you already own a night vision device.

I agree.

I'd love to have NV, but I have no place I can shoot at night.

Copy that guys.  I'm going to order a 512 just as soon as we get through next week (holidays).

Again, appreciate the help.

I'd go ahead and order now.  A price increase is due for 2007.  I sort of dissed the local guys here and bought one at Cal's Sporting Armory.  I think it's trapped in the snow in Denver, but I'd be glad to post an update when it gets here.

Well I ordered a 512 today from PK Firearms.  They were a solid $30 cheaper than one I looked at in my town today (not counting local sales tax) & they kicked in a free "hoodie" for it.

Glad to support a site sponsor and I must say that all the site sponsors I emailed asking availability and "freshness" dates responded right away.....which is 180-out from the luck I was having from vendors out on Gunbroker (most didn't reply).

Now, the big question is whether to stay directly mounted on the reciever or which mount to buy i.e. LaRue etc, whether or not to go absolute co-witness, 1/3 co-witness, which type of rear BUIS to go with..........

Man it never ends!!!!!!!!!!!

Botach Tactical has the 551 D1 Military on sale for $299. it's an older model but is it still a good deal?

Well I'm sure you will get varying opinions on what BUIS and co-witness, but I reccomend you check out RRA's Dominator mount.  This has the BUIS directly attached.  It does not flip down- Somedon't like this idea others do.  I like the fact that I don't have to piss with flipping it up if I have to use it in a hurry.  I don't think it effects sight picture either.  If your focusing on the pattern, then your eyes will automatically "fade out" the back site.

Got my Eotech in yesterday.  Kudos to PK for getting it to my door in 3 business days!

Mounted it up last night and I really need to play with it out in the field.  Right now I'm having a hard time adjusting to the fact the center dot reticle doesn't stay in a fixed position relative to the front irons.  I find myself tweaking my cheekweld to put the dot on the iron post (after I've pulled) up.
