Hello, I'm thinking about getting a hold on an ACOG right now, but I'm not sure which one I should get. I've read the tacked threads, and this that and the other, and more or less know the difference between them (though I don't have the numbers all memorized) and I'm thinking that the TA01NSN might be my best bet. Here's the low down, I am schedueled to go to AOBC (Armor Officer's Basic) in March, I'm not sure what we're issued there, but I believe it's supposed to be Aimpoint CCO's. Already got one, an ML2, check. That being said, I'd like to look into an ACOG as well. Therefore, in addition to having a magnified optic, I want something that has at least a functional commonality to what the military's being issued. Fine, because I've been tending to see TA01's, TA01NSN's, and TA31 on M4's. At the same time, I want something that can be used reflexively if necessary in a pinch, and I'm thinking the backup irons (or a Dr. Optic, but I haven't got the money for that yet...) on the TA01NSN would be a good choice, since it looks like, while the ACOG's mounted, it doesn't allow clearance for a BUIS (I'm currently using a MATECH on my personal carbine, and likely similar on anything issued). Finally, I'd like to use the optic as a supplemental bino/spotting scope so I don't have to worry about yanking out, and resercuring and yanking out my binos again. Thanks, ~Augee |

I recommend the TA31F. It is a military issue optic, has the fiber-optic BAC for close-in shooting, is precise enough for longer range stuff. I've used one successfully in combat. I find the chevron reticle of the 'F' model to be the best one for precision while not sacrificing speed, but you could also check out the 'donut' on the 31 or the 'triangle' on the 31A. |

Thanks, Phoebus, you seem to have a lot of valuable experience and input, am I right in assuming that the MATECH won't clear the ACOG? While no matter what, I'm relatively certain that I'd always have a BUIS, whether I'd have to buy, cheat or steal one, being too much of a techno-phobe myself, did you ever find yourself with the need to deploy one? Also, I realize that you're an 11B, but it sounds like more and more, if you're combat arms, you're mostly doing the same job now, any advice for us 19 series guys? Would like to ask you some other questions if you'd IM me, as well. My unit is deploying to A-stan next year, and while I've got no definites on it, I have been told to be ready to follow on with the unit in country in July after I finish AOBC. Thanks, ~Augee |

I got the NSN model not bad. Try to find a place that has a couple diffrent models in stock to check out. So you can get a feel for each of the diffrent targeting options. I like the ACOG's but the 4x mag gets a bit old at times. The new redone Elcan Specter DR should be out at the start of the year. That might cost a bit more and wiegh a bit more. But the new models are the Dark Earth tone and are spose to come with the DR optic mounted on top. Plus you have the 1x and 4x mag. That might be somthing you would want to look into also. |
