Hi RafterMan,

I’m not sure what rail you are looking at for $100 to $150.00 but when it comes to this you get what you pay for.  I recommend saving our money and getting a TROY, ARMS, Daniel Defense, or LaRue.

The two-piece rail systems are very good I use a TROY myself.  For a rail system the Aluminum is the way to go.  What one are are you looking for?

Here is a TROY

Summary:

One Piece - Free floating handguards do not touch the barrel.  They only touch the reciever.  Improves accuracy.  A front sight tower needs to be removed for installation.  A picatinny or low profile gas block will not need to be removed for installation.

Two piece- Installed just like your standard hand gaurds.

Metal- Usually some type of aluminum.  Beware of soft chinese clones.

Plastic- Cheaper but not as sturdy as metal.  Not a good idea if you are mounting aiming lasers.  Rail corners aren't sharp and don't need covers.

Price- Plenty non-free float to choose from <$150.  I don't have a brand recommendation.  Check the industry partners.

Opinions-  Everybody has one.   Mine is that most people over rail their guns "keeping up with the Jones."  Are you mounting a PEQ-2A, PVS-14, bipod, vertical grip, visible and IR illuminator, target designator, blah blah blah?  The Jones's do.  That's why they are issued a quad rail handguard.

I'm from the "less is more" school.  Decide what accessories you need for your "mission" then decide on a mounting solution.  Is your mission Personnel Security?  Patrol?  Long Range Recce?  Household defense?  Hunting?  IPSC?  Casual range shooting?  Poser?

This thread will get plenty of posts of brand/model recommendations.  I suggest giving your needs some thought before purchasing.  Good luck.
