Hello guys,
I'm a newbie with lots of questions. I ordered a Rock River 16" Flat Top with a weaver gas block instead of the normal front sight. I have No idea what to do about sights. Ideally I was thinking iron sights (maybe a carry handle) and a scope on the handle? I liked the idea of having irons for close stuff and maybe a scope for 300yds that could be used at the same time without changing anything. Is that possible?

What scope would be good for a tactical rifle in the 300 yard range? If you use those lever type mounts for a scope, is it dead on without re-zeroing if you take it on and off?

Lastly, What is the difference bewteen A1, A2, and A3 rear sights? Thanks a lot for any input . I would like to get this worked and and have sights on the way before my rifle shows up next month. Decisions decisions!

no carry handle.  get a flip up front/rear, zero 50m.  then figure out what kind of scope you want, 1-4, 3-9, etc for longer ranges.

Thanks for the reply. What kind of mount will allow me to see my iron sights and still look through the scope?

None that you would want to use.  The scope would be too high above the bore for good, consistent cheek weld.  Just get a variable scope with low magnification on the low end, a fixed low power scope, or set up back up irons and just pop the scope into a quick detach mount and take it off if you want to shoot irons.

If you are looking to co-witness you cannot use a scope you will need a 0x sight like the EoTech or Aimpoint.

I like the aimpoint and eotechs, but you really don't gain much since irons will do just about the same thing because neither one magnifies. I guess I am asking too much to be able to use irons and a scope. Thanks for the help guys.

A scope and Irons just do not work at this time together I wish I could say yes.

Irons and reflex sights do not do the same thing, not by a long shot.

Reflex sights allow for fast shooting and target acquisition.

I just meant the same as far as magnification. I'm going to be shooting paper with this rifle so speed is not as important to me right now. Maybe in the future I will learn some tactical entry type stuff or something that will require a speedy aquisition. Thanks for the replies guys. Please feel free to add more opinions and comments.

I must respectfully disagree. The EOTech's, with their 1MOA center dot, allow for a great deal of precision at a distance. At 100 yards, the range I most often shoot, groups have shrunk significantly with my EOTech 512 compared to irons. I have no reason to doubt the trend wouldn't continue at longer distances.

Well I don't know anything so any input (and correction) is appreciated.
I am thinking that an eotech is probably the way to go. Is there any real difference between the Bushnell holosight and an eotech? I know that battery life is longer on an eotech and the 512 and 552 take AA's, but is that worth the extra $100+? This rifle is just a toy afterall! Please help!

The Bushnell is a pretty decent unit at about 2/3 the cost of an EOTech. I've read reviews at MidwayuSA of people using them on .454 Casull and .500 S&W dinosaur killers. While they can apparently handle stiff recoil, I doubt they're anywhere nearly as durable in terms of drop protection compared to an EOTech. But for a range-only AR where you can be careful and battery life isn't a serious issue, the Bushnell warrants a close look.
