Ok so I'm building a tactical AR, mostly for plinking, but will see some 3 gun matches and occasional varminting.

Will also be the SHTF gun.hat
Also consideing a 2-7 or some such low power variable scope but I wonder what kind of speed I'll loose at close range with a scope, even on a low power over a dot type sight.

I imagine I'll use a dot sight as a primary and have a scope for varminting and longer range plinking.hanks

So what are the pro's and con's of an eotech or holosight type vs an aimpoint type. I'll probably go with a clone either way. I like the idea of multiple reticles, but the aimpoint type looks more durable. (And way cooler!)

Opinions and experiences please.

Well hell, if you're gonna buy a clone you might as well just get 'em both.  But remember you get what you pay for.  Try 'em out, pick the one you like and buy the real thing.  Then sell the clones on the EE so someone else can give 'em a try.

Save your money on those "multiple reticle" holosights... ATN, Hakko, etc. They suck.  Yes, I've owned them, so I can say that all I want.  They don't hold zero for crap.  For a "SHTF" rifle, you might as well just use irons.

Here, let me show you what happens when an OKO falls two feet to the floor at an angle (on carpet).

How'd you like to defend yourself from those MBZ's using THIS thing?  Can't even use those co-witnessed irons through this mess!

But hey, if you want one, I'll sell it to you CHEAP!  Maybe YOU can get somebody in their Customer Dis-Service department to answer the phone!

Just get an EOTech, or an Aimpoint, or an Airsoft toy.

The EOTech is in use with the FBI, CIA, Customs, ATF, and many police units and Swat teams. Itis faster then the Aimpoint. As far as durability they are equal. I had an Aimpoint M2 on my RRA Carbine and jumped at the chance to trade it for an EOTech. The EoTech is just so much faster to engage multiple targets fast, and since the center dot is 1 moa it is better at the range than the Aimpoint. Everyone says "but the military uses Aimpoints."

Don't forget they buy what they get the better deal on at the time not always what is better. Just look at how man agencies went twith the EOTech and that says it all.

There are a bunch of EOTech's in use by the U.S. military as well. I have pictures of USAF Pararescuemen and 101 ABN troopers with EOTechs. SOCOM recently awarded a $16+ million contract for a whole bunch. USMC obtained 2000 for Force Recon and the 24th MEU.

I prefer the EOTech-style aiming point as both a sighting tool and poor man's range estimator. Another plus, for those of us with astigmatism, is the EOTech aiming point. In a recent side-by-side comparison I made between Aimpoint, Zeiss Z-Point and EOTech, the former two had a "bunch of grapes" look instead of a true dot. The EOTech, however, had no such distortion.

Yeah, I think I have decided to go eotech (or bushnell holosight). I see it alot and have heard its reticle is better for both short and medium range.

Looks like the bushnell can be had for $150 or so. Probably not quite as durable as eotech but a lot better tha a lamepoint or other clone.

thanks

+1 on the EO Tech.  I went to the shop with enough money to come home with the red dot of my choice, spent about an hour playing with an EO and the Aimpoint.  Both are great sights and both have strengths and weaknesses.  But all things considered I liked the EO tech a little better so I brought one home.
Having said that I am getting ready to dot a new (to me : )) DSA SA58 carbine with the Quad Rail HG.  I'll probably go with an Aimpoint M2 or M3 for it in the lowest mount I can find because the  EO sets up too high on the Quad, I have to come way up off the stock to get a good sight pic.  Not a problem on my M4 but definately noticable on the SA58.
