I need a recommendation for scope for a DPMS flattop. I need reasonable eye relief, goldilocks, not too much, not too little. I will be shooting prone and it is mandatory the scope gives good head/ eye position. Using my current scope, I have to drag my head way back on the stock to get good position. Pain in the butt, to say the least, not too good for the position either. I shoot hipower (iron sights) mostly, but the scoped upper really educates one on the prone position. Anything reasonably priced out there? again, this is not for table shooting. Thanks for the help. Billy D |

You have provided little information to give you any type of decent reply. However one way of dealing with eye relief adjustment is to use an extended rail on top of the flatop. This can extend right over the handguard and you are then able to move the scope forward as much as you want. I shoot prone also but decided against the rail, for now, because I wanted the scope to be mounted fairly low for comfort sake. Instead I bought a Magpul stock which allows me to extend the length of pull and for a guy my height, that worked out better. I said "so far," because I am always experimenting. I shoot at distances up to 1000 yards and for me, extreme magnification was not desirable, range of adjustment and optic quality are far more important, and a scope that I can depend on to return to the various settings without fail. I chose a Nikon Tactical 2.5-10X44 but there are many others out there. Define what you think is reasonable priced. |

I think the extended rail item is a good idea. My upper is a DPMS lo pro, 20 inch bull barrel; shoots well out to 300 yards with current scope. I am using the risers and the height is good but my head is way back. The scope is an inexpensive 3 - 12X Tasco, not bad, but I would like better. The gun really shoots well using just 3X magnification, in fact, much better than I thought, groups are really tight. 4X is my max magnification. I would consider $300 my upper limit. Fixed is fine, and yes, I like turrets. Anything out there you could recommend? thanks for the help. It is appreciated. Bill D |

My first thought was the reason you use 3X on your 3-12X Tasco is that any higher magnification is crap in that scope. Then you indicat that 4X is your desired maximum. I was going to suggest looking at a SuperSniper scope at SWFA.COM; they are fixed power and $300 but their lowest power is 10X. There have been many people raving about them on this forum, but I have no experience with them. I do believe that 10X is the proper magnification for competing in something like F-t/r class out to 1000 yards. The SWFA web site also shows very nice Leupold 4X for $270; that would be a top choice for you. It also carries some nice Nikons with a fixed 4X magnification at $250. This would probably be my choice as it has turrets and I love the Nikons. The eye relief is 3.5-4 inches for these two scopes. Since they have 1inch tubes, you should be able to use your current rings. Good luck. |
