No, I am looking at ordering one.  Then I heard that some of them have the "canting" problem.  I am just leary spending that money for one and geting a model that cants.

I have 2 512's that I purchased brandnew from different dealers along with  EoTech "goose neck" mounts for A2 rifles. I had no problems with either of them "canting". My only complaint is that after cleaning the rifles(removing upper from lower) the EoTechs lose their zero, not by much but are off none the less the next trip to the range. I have limited my cleaning to not taking the rifles completely apart after each range trip and this has solved the "loss of zero" problem.

I just received my 552 back from the factory when the July 1 recall started for the canting problem.  Eotech fixed the problem with my 552.  It sits flat on my RRA dominator mount as well as my RRA flattop.  It took a little while to solve the problem with my mount, but Eotech's customer service was fantastic all the way through.

Are they Rev F's?

Can you tell us please (maybe with photos even) what was changed on the unit?

Thanks!

My 511 had a slight right cant on my upper. It was a small thing but I hated it! I traded in for a aimpoint and have been happy ever since.

I'm getting ready to buy a 3x magnifier so I moved the eotech from the flattop upper receiver to the front handguard to make room for the 3x.  I heard about this canting problem, but I never had this problem with my eotech when mounted on top of the receiver.  However, when I move the eotech forward onto the handguard-half on the receiver and half on the handguard- It cants down to the right.
It's weird that it doesn't cant when its on the flattop but cants when I move it up
Is this normal?

What recall?  Do you have a serial number range?  I bought a 512 a month or two ago but have yet to sight it in.

I have to keep my 512 secured to the flattop directly.  If I try to move it onto my Troy handguard, it won't even hold on.  The rail edges on the handguard are not sharp like they are on the flattop.

What kind of upper do you have the Aimpoint mounted on ?   Do the iron sights co-witness with the Aimpoint red dot ?  Where does the iron sight picture sit inside the Aimpoint, lower 1/4, 1/3, dead center ?

Canting can result from having the one end of the clip upside down

I think Dragonfly228's point is this -->

The picatinny rail clamp underneath the armor shround on the bottom of the optic.  If you replace the set screw and the clamp falls out it's possible to re-install it upside down so that the bevel on the clamp face and the bevel on the rail are mis-matched

am I tracking?

Can you guys explain the canting issue a bit more?  I jusr received a 512 few days ago and I have yet to sight it.  Was revision F models affected by this issue?

I bought an EoTech from a local shop.  I put it on an AR before I left. No canting.

I had 2 552's rev F's that had the canting problem. Kept sending it back to Eotech
(3 times) before they were bought by L3 and they all came back with the canting. Sold one off and bought an Aimpoint M2. NEver had to look back! Great service from Eotech...but thats no good if you cant get it to mount properly. I use an Arms throw lever mount on mine.

It has been an issue with EOTech, but I wonder if a lot of times the upper receivers are out of spec?

My earlier 552 Rev F is fine.  My roommate ordered one a few months back, and his canted on all of our rails/uppers.  He sent it back, and it still cants on his CMT upper, but is fine on my KAC and LMT stuff, as well as the rail on his Beretta Storm.

Our old roommate had the same problem...the culprit again was a CMT upper.  I have a much older CMT upper with which I can recall no problems using the EOTech.

It might be that CMT, which makes uppers for plenty of people, put out a huge batch of shitty uppers.

I'm not saying that EOTech is blameless, but just that the sight should be mounted on other rails to be sure before putting all the blame on EOTech.

Try mounting it backwards to see if it changes direction of cant on the gun.  If not, then it's the rail, if so, then it's the eotech.  Otherwise, unscrew the set screw all the way.

I have a 552 on my 6920 and it cants slightly to the left. I decided to live with it and I had forgotten about it until I saw this thread. I just bought two 512s and they were both fine.

Can someone post a picture of this canting problem? Is the scope visably canted or is it just the ajdustments on the reticle?
8/16/2006 12:01:11 PM EDT
[#24]
The whole unit is visibly canted. This is a function of rail size and the, erm, unique interface with the rail which the Eotech has.

I dug out a variety of dodgy old rails, measured them (with a micrometer) and tried the Eotech.

If the rail is undersize then the unit will lean to the right (viewed from behind) whereas an oversize rail will cause the unit to lean to the left.

Even the variance allowed within the milspec rail will cause this although the amount of lean is so small that you have to look quite hard to find it.

If you look at the rail interface on the Eotech it only rests on the angled portion of the rail - it doesn't touch the flat upper section. If the rail is slightly over or under sized then the point where the eo touches the angled section will be higher or lower, causing the cant.

Email from Eotech:

> Please keep in mind that all we are doing is increasing the width of the
> base width allowance in our sight by a thousandth of an inch or so. This
> is to accommodate a greater variety of rail tolerances out on the market
> today. If there are issues with the rail specs, the modification will
> not resolve the issue. The cant is a purely aesthetic factor that does
> not affect the accuracy or security of the sight on the rifle.
