I recently got to try one of these, and I was wondering what others think of them especially if you have done any head to head testing with other top end scopes.

I really like the design of the reticle.  It seems like it would be quite handy for using quickly at varied distances.

They better be good as they spend a small fortune on ads, it seems..................

Everything I've read on them seems to indicate good design, poor execution.

they are made just down the road from me
meet Mr Shepherd a few times

the concept works
but the scopes are not of the quality I would expect out of a $600+ scope

I had 2 they worked great but both had a wandering zero

the 22LR  I had was really cool if it would have just held a zero

I have one mounted on a FN SPR.  I like it.  Really fast range estimation and engagement while hunting.

The optics quality, especially in really low light, could be better for the price, but I haven't had any wandering zero problems.  Some have said it's not "rugged", but I've never had a problem with it breaking while hunting with it.  I don't feel I got ripped off by any means.

Good idea overall.  The one shot zero method works pretty well.  Optics are good, but not exceptional.  Ranging reticles to 1000 is a bit optimistic and may encourage some bad practices.  Reports indicate that some users have had zero holding problems with the scopes.  They are heavy for a scope of the same magnification class.

FWIW, I sold the ones I had.

Why was this topic moved?  The description for the optics section says, "Every type of sight and related products for your AR."  I don't intend to put this on my AR.  The optics section listed under AR-15 seems to be the eotech, aimpoint, or BUIS section.

Anyway, which model are people using on their .308s?  It looks like either P2 or P3.

Mine was a P2 it came on a steyr SSG I bought

the hold over was dead on with 168s out to 700 yards ( i do not have access to a longer range )

just everytime i took it out i would have to rezero
the dual crosshairs make it easy but it was annoying

I swapped it to a  leupold 6X MK4 I got cheap

when my 22LR did the same  wandering zero and a coworkers 22 magnum did the same i gave up on them

I got 90% of my $$ back when i sold them on Ebay though  soit was not a bad gamble

G19, thanks for the input.  I don't mind the scope being off slightly from range trip to range trip.  But, I want it to work consistently on any given day for the whole day.

Differences in load, light, humidity, etc. would seem to explain away any major differences from day to day for my purposes.

The P2 was usually within 3 MOA and once sighted back in it would hold zero all day
When i put the leupold on the same gun it was almost always dead on  if it was off it was only  maybe 1/2in or so  which I would account to environmental conditions or just to the shooter

the 22LR was a different story it would be off up to 6moa on occasion and once zeroed it would only hold for maybe 50-100 rounds and then  the group would shift a large amount without warning

My buddies 22mag worked about as well as the P2 i had

If you are looking at used stay well away from the real old shepherds that had all the reticles built in  , you changed the reticles with a knob
they were really really bad , but you very rarely see them

If I get one, it will be new.  I really like using optics, but I mainly shoot with iron sight people.  So, I have to buy things without ever having used them.  I have heard good things about Nightforce, S&B, US optics, etc.  The Shepherd is one I have actually used though.  So, that puts it in the lead.

I have used a weaver 24x a lot, and I really like it.  But, for shooting popups and stuff, that is way too much magnification.

I used an ACOG for a while.  I found its reticle too busy.  Ironically, the shepherd reticle is busier, but I prefer its layout.

I have also used a burris with the bdc reticle.  I lose its stadia too easily.
