Hi.  I am about to order my first scope for a soon to arrive AR-10.  I am just learning about longer range shooting but don't anticipate shooting beyond 200 yds. and if I do it will not be often.  It seems that Mil-dot is the reticle of choice by many here.  I was going to get a Nikon Buckmaster #6469 Mil-dot.  I have seen some very attractive deals of some Nikon Tactical scopes but they have a Nicoplex (Duplex) reticle.  If I got one of these would I be kicking myself later when I learn more that I don't have a Mil-dot?   Thanks in advance.

The Nikon are nice optics but I prefer the Leupold to the Nikon especially the a Leupold with the TMR reticle.

as Mike mentioned the leupy optics are really nice. They arent the best of the best...but they are pretty damn good. I cant speak for nikon, i never owned one, but i have many leupolds and they are all damn good. If you get a fine duplex it'll prolly get what you want done. One of the pluses of the mildots is they usually have a really fine cross hair, and they wont cover much of the target up. If you are planning on shooting known distance targets you wont really need the mildot.  But down the road when you want to really learn to shoot long range the milling features of a mildot scope are priceless. Then you have the fun of chosing, army style mildot, 3/4 marine style mildot, gen 2 mildot, TMR, Front focal plane, Second focal plane reticles...etc. There are tons..they have moa reticles also. This will come into play later on though when you are more into it. But you can learn the basics with that nikon.  Just get out and shoot that rifle, that's the main thing, from there you'll learn what works for you and what doesnt. That's how you'll know what you'll really want.  snipershide.com has a great forums dedicated to every aspect of long range shooting. It's like the ar15.com of bolt guns. check that out sometime.
