My first AR will be arriving via UPS pretty soon, I can't wait. In reading this board I see that a lot, if not most of you, have some version of an Aimpiont or Eotech on your rifles. I used to shoot an M16 when I was in the Air Force, and obviously have only shot iron sights. Can someone explain how the red dot sights work and the advantages that they give. I've read so many recomendations and reviews, but I really don't know what kind of benifit they offer vs. traditional iron sights or how I would use one while shooting. Thanks in advance. -Jeff |
| You put the dot on what you want to hit. They are faster and give a better field of view over irons when utilizing both eyes open shooting. Although not deemed adequate for precision shooting they fill the CQB role very well. When quick close in shooting is involved a red dot sight will have a distinct advantage over irons or magnified optics. |

Is it two floating dots that you line up on top of eachother, in order to guarantee that you're looking straight? Or is it a single dot that you use in conjunction with your front sight? Also, I'm well aware that you get what you pay for in this world. I've read a couple of threads that pointed out that fake Aimpoints do not last as long (battery life) as the real ones. Since I'm building a 600 dollar rifle, I find it hard to justify buying a $250+ sight for it. Aside from battery life, does a 50 dollar imination from eBay operate well enough to work effectivly? I know that it will probably break easier and run the batteries out quicker, but how well do the fakies mount and aim? Is it worth trying out a cheap sight on my cheap build or should I not even bother? -Jeff |
It's a single dot you place on the target. You don't need to worry about the front sight, and you don't need to center the dot in the optic. That's why they are so fast - dot on target, squeeze trigger. And yes, I would recommend to just get a good one to start with, if you can afford it. If you don't you'll just end up buying one later. Don't forget you'll need a mount too. |
I guess this may be a dumb question, but a sight doesn't come with a basic dovetail mount? That amazes me. If I'm going with a reputable company but a basic model which company should I go for. Aimpoint or Eotech? Or is there another one I havent heard of? |
I love my Trijicon Reflex II |
Aimpoint used to include a basic ring with the sight, but I don't know if the new ones have it. The problem is, their ring is too low for mounting directly on a flat top receiver. Also, if it helps, consider that most scopes don't come with rings. My personal preference is Aimpoint over Eotech, but both work well. Your best bet would be if you could try both (at a shoot or if your local dealer can accommodate). |
