Well, I'm open for imput...

I want an optic for the black rifle (A3) but I want to drop and reattach the optic/handle if necessary, so here is a bunch of questions I have.

1.) Man, I am split between a Eotech and an Aimpoint. ACOGs are just out of my price range. Why do you like a Eotech style over a Aimpoint style, and what MOA works best for you. Looks like a 4MOA or larger is way too big at 100m and a 2MOA is to small for close combat. Adjustable would be REAL nice.

2.) Mounts. I am thinking center of optic co-witness.

3.) I will need a new rear flip up to co-witness, any suggestions.

I want the most bang for the buck, not El CheapO but not gold plated either.

THANKS in advance for all your help, I have searched all over the Net' and here on AR-15 but still have lots of questions. It sure would be nice to be able to handle about a dozen different setups ahead of time.

Read some of the tacked threads, they might answer some of your questions. If you can, find a shop locally that has the EOTech and the Aimpoint so you can compare for yourself.

Ya, I have been reading all the threads here on AR15 and I have a pretty good idea where I am going. I just wonder what personal preferance drives the decision between Eotek and Aimpoint. Also what is a good compromise for dot size.

If you can't afford an ECOG you might wanna look at those ACOGs.  I hear those a great!

FWIW, my first choice would be an ACOG....second choice would EOTECH.

Never tried the Aimpoint - so I vote EOTech. I have put 1k through both a model 551 and 552.

2.) Mounts. I am thinking center of optic co-witness.

For my flat top Bushmaster no mount needed to get an easy %100 full co-witness.

3.) I will need a new rear flip up to co-witness, any suggestions.

I like my ARMS 40. It has worked great and is rugged and tough.

I want the most bang for the buck, not El CheapO but not gold plated either.

The ACOGs are excellent optics but I would stick with a zero mag red dot type sight. As a civilian, I would be hard pressed to think of a situation where I would need magnification and a BDC on a fighting carbine. An Aimpoint or EoTech is much better than an ACOG at CQB distances and just as good out to 150m or so.

Don't get me wrong, If I was in the military in a scout or DM role, or fighting across large, open areas, the ACOGs would be damn near perfect. I just don't see a realistic use for them in a defensive role. You can damn near buy three Aimpoints or EoTechs for the price of an ACOG.

Good points by triburst1. Think of all the ammo you can buy with the savings of an EOTech or Aimpoint compared to the otherwise excellent ACOG.

I too am deciding on what will adorn the top of the RRA I'm ordering soon. After some discussion and a lot of lurking here, as well as picking the brains of a couple AR shooting buddies, I'm almost certainly going with an EOTech. Some of the reasons why include no need for a special mount, larger "window" for viewing, and a slightly reduced cost compared to an Aimpoint + mount.

I have an Aimpoint Comp ML2 with the 4 MOA dot on a LaRue mount on my 16" Bushmaster flat top. Very speedy target aqusition and I can break clays laid on the berm at 100 yard all day long while standing. I like the Eotech as well, best bet find two someplace and see which one you like.

Have you tried both? EOTech and Aimpoint both work. One will work better for you. Find out which and buy it.

I'd got with the EoTech...but if you have any astigmatism, you may want to look through one first.  Astigmatism makes the reticle look "fuzzy", for want of a better word.  I find it's worse indoors, but I got used to it in any event.  I like the fact that the center dot on the EoTechs are 1moa...gives you a little better view of smaller targets...it's a little harder to do that with the Aimpoint.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Aimpoint too...but I think the EoTech is a little quicker.  Plus, it mounts right to the flat top with it's built in mount, and will co-witness perfectly with any rear BUIS you want to use...that'll save you a couple of $$ versus the Aimpoint.    You might check the EE for a used ARMS 40...that's probably the cheapest option for the BUIS.

You can't go wrong with either, really...it's just that the EoTech is little cheaper up front since you really don't need a mount for it.
