just got my ARMS Mount. Question, if my iron sites are already zeroed can't I just move my red dot to even with my front site to zero it w/o having to actually go to the range today to shoot it? I am referring to co-witnessing here by the way. I am a newbie to all the optics and mounts. thanks

That is a good method to get you on the paper, if your lucky you’ll be with in a few shots of zero.

I mounted an OKO  red dot  and didn't have the directions with me, so trying to adjust the damned thing, (turning the screws the wrong way) I walked my point of impact right off paper and was getting really frustrated.

I had seen a documentary about Okinawa where a gun crew with five inch cannon were sighting by looking through the breach until they had their target spotted and then firing.

So....running out of ammo and patience, I broke open the upper and pulled the bolt and with the rifle on some sand bags moved it around til I could see the bullseye through the barrel.  Then I moved my eye to the red dot and I could see where the dot was and then adjusted the screws now  in the correct direction and moved the dot back where it coincided with what I could see down the barrel.

Yeah, I know I didn't independantly invent bore sighting, it was just a field expedient that was inspired by the History channel !

But it got me really close, and it's something you could do down the length of a hall or out  your kitchen window without firing a shot.

Quib you were right on the $. I got an Arms # 39 A2 mount and cheap Leatherwood 30mm red dot from BM just to seee if I would like that type of setup. I sited the dot to just above my front site sitting in my living room. This a Oly 9mm upper & BM lower.  Then I went in my backyard set some clay skeet on the ground at 70 yds and 50 yds and just using the the dot hit them every time. After about 70 rounds though the ARMS required a tightening to get back to zero

Sounds great!

That’s actually a pretty common method used quite often, glad it worked out for you.
