I have enjoyed this website for a long time and found it to be very useful in making a decision on the purchase of a black rifle.  I have a Colt model 6920 on the way as I pen this.

I see sticky threads about several optics, but nothing about Eotech.  In looking around, I notice Eotech has 2 or 3 models offered, which all look alike.  Can someone explain the differences in the models, and which would be a good offering for a patrol rifle?

Sorry there is a thread but it's been archived (which means you have to be a paying member to see it).

Basically it breaks down to this.

500 series - basic consumer model w/o roll bar.

511 - LEO/Military model, runs on N-Batteries and has a roll bar, no night vision mode
512 - LEO/Military model, runs on AA-Batteries, has the roll bar, no night vision mode

551 - LEO/Military model, runs on N-Batteries and has a roll bar, has night vision modes
552 - LEO/Military model, runs on AA-Batteries, has the roll bar, has night vision modes

There is also a new model comming out (not sure if it will be available to the public) this model will run on 123 type batteries (like your Surefire) and will have the magnifier hood interface.

Best review I've seen on the EOTech was done by AR15.coms own SMGLee of CLTactical.com:

Thanks guys.  I knew I had missed it somewhere.  The Eotech seems to be too good a product to have not been mentioned here.

I would suggest that you go with an Aimpoint.  This is coming from someone that recently purchased a new 511 and I really dislike it.....quality wise!

Mine has bounced off quite a few trees while coyote hunting and is still zeroed. It has been pretty cold recently (0-20 degrees tops during the day) and the batteries have stood up well.

I have nothing but good things to say about my Eotech.  If I had the money, I would buy an Aimpoint just to compare them.

This is why!

This piece of crap leans really far to the left.  Oh, but EOTech says that they have never put out a bad product and anyone that has an EOTech that leans, it is because the rifle's receiver is out of spec.

I have placed this site on another rifle (another brand) and it leanded the exact same way.  One member here suggested that I mount the EOTech backwards on my rifle to see if it leaned the opposite direction, showing that it is the sight.  I tried this and it leaned to the right.

EOTech sent me a replacement, which leaned also (though not as bad).

That is why I think that their quality control is horrible.  Do a search, you will see quite a few people that have had this problem.    A buddy of mine just put a 511 on his Rock River and it leans to the right.

That is why when I can afford it, I am going to have a new Aimpoint M3.
