I already did a search and it seemed to raise more questions than it answered. I'll try to keep this simple. I'd like a 4x magnified optic for my Colt 6920 flattop. My ammo of choice is the Federal XM193 ball. The gun is for possible defense scenarios, plinking, occasional varmit (edit: cyotes and close range groundhogs) shooting, and if my department ever gets off it's butt and joins up with the rest of the 21st century, patrol usage. TA31's and TA31A's are fast becomming affordable and If I sell my Aimpoint, I'd be half way home with other funds I've set aside. Cost is a major factor and that's why I'm considering the TA31 series. I've read that eye relief is limited with the TA31 compared to the TA11. How severe is the difference and how precise must eye-alignment be to use the TA31? I like the idea of the BAC for up-close use, but I'm concerned that it would be difficult to use quickly. Is this a real problem or just an issue to be trained around? How close is the BDC when used on a flattop vs. a carry handle. I have a carry handle and would be fine using it if necessary. I also have a Troy folding BUIS for use in the flattop configuration. I feel that the practical range for my needs is about 200 yards. Is the BDC "close enough" for these ranges when switched between the flattop and carry handle? What, it any, are the drawbacks to the TA31? What are your thoughts on the different reticles? Does the donut or triangle make precise shots difficult as opposed to the chevron? Thanks for the help. |

I love my TA31, but here's my take: 1. I don't think the TA31 is good varmiting glass. It's meant for battle, not for shooting small furry creatures. 2. You also have the ability to match your Aimpoint with an Aimpoint magnifier, if you need threat recognition capabililty. 3. 200 yards is doable with an Aimpoint, even more so with a magnifier. |

the ta31 is a nice scope, the reticle is not as precise as the triangle or chevron but plenty good. there is a tacked thread at the top with different bdc charts. i like the eyerelief on the ta31 series scopes and think the bit longer of the ta11 is not worth the weight heres one for sale if you are looking |

Most depts will not permit the use of magnified optics on patrol rifles. So, you best check this out before purchasing any magnified optic for this potential purpose. The TA11 serice has more generous eye relief and this may or may not be a factor for you depending on how you function with the BAC. For me, I was far better with the TA11 then the TA31 utilizing the BAC. Why you ask? I don't know? I struggled with the TA31 but found the TA11 a breeze. Others may have just the opposite experiance. Since you have a flattop, I would recommend mounting the ACOG directly to the upper receiver. This will require you to purchase BUIS and utilizing a mount for the ACOG. You can get a good set used BUIS for $80.00 to $90.00 on the EE board. As to the ACOG mount, some models come with one from Trijicon, or you can buy any number of good quality mounts off the EE board. While you can mount it on the carry handle, you may find it cumbersome to secure the weapon in your patrol vehicle unless your store it in a case in the trunk. As for your reticle selection, the general option is that the donut provides for faster sight aquisition but the cheveron provides better precision. There are pages and pages of threads detailing these reticles and people's opinions. You might want to consider looking at the new and improved Trijicon Tri-Power. It has a nice cheveron reticle which would give you more precission at distance but function very well for CQ work. Hope this helped. Regards, Gary |
