I have a fixed front sight, and removable carry handle.  I just ordered a Leupold 3X9 MR/T, and I don't know how high I need to mount the scope.  I could wait and experiment when the scope gets here, but I figured someone already knows this.   thanks for any advice

I would mount it low and just deal with any dark shadowing you may get at the lower magnifications.

5x on up you won't even see it.   3~4x you may see a bit of a shadow

Too high over bore introduces a whole other set of problems.

............a good cheek weld is important as well when mounting the scope, with magified scopes the front sight isnt as much as a problem since it will blur out on really low settings and disappear with higher settings as f4yr have stated.

I SUGGEST YOU MOUNT IT IN A 1.5" HIGH MOUNT, LIKE THE LARUE SPR MOUNT. THIS HEIGHT PUTS YOU 1/10" HIGHER THAN THE FRONT SIGHT POST.

OF COURSE, I RECOMMEND THE LARUE SPR SCOPE MOUNT FOR ALL AR' SCOPE MOUNT APPLICATIONS. UNFORTUNATELY, WE ARE OUT OF 30MM SPR MOUNTS AT PRESENT.

You'll love that LaRue mount.

If you have the money definately go with the Larue!  I just put a mueller 3-9 on my flattop w/front sight.  I used cheapo (Waiting for more funds) see through weaver mounts which raised it some.  I would say the center of the crosshairs are just below the front sight pin.  I don't have any issues with the sight getting in the way or making anything blurry.  I will eventually though buy a larue mount for mine.
