I never had a scope before and need your help to choose one.  Reading lots of threads about scope just confuses me and don't help me at all.

I want to get a scope for 16" RRA varminter upper to shoot between 100 - 600 yds.  I won't do any hunting but only for target shooting.  Also, I would like use the scope on a 10/22 rifle that I plan to get later for shooting up to 100 yds.  There is no budget set firmly but I was mainly looking at something between $300 - $500.  Certainly want to get dependable & rugged and hope this scope to be the last purchase in my life!

Minimum features I want...(Not sure what are really important)
1. Knob style click adjustments dials
2. 1/4 MOA increments for windage & elevation

Please recommend...
1. Manufacturer
2. Model
3. Recticle style
4. Magnification range
5. Scope rings for AR flat top(proper height?)

Thanks for your help!

Matt.

Let me make a suggestion that has worked well for meand is within your budget. For the scope you might consider the Super Sniper series from www.riflescopes.com (SWFA). They are fixed power and come in 10X,16X and 20X. For flat top mount I chose the A.R.M.S 36 Swan extended mount (wanted to mount scope in a more foward position) and Leupold QRW 30mm high rings. This combination has worked very well for me.

I second the Super Sniper line.  10X should be enough for your purposes.  I think they run about $299.  Hook it up with an Armalite 1-piece mount and you're ready to rock.  You could spring for the Larue MRP if you really wanted to get crazy.  I'm not sure that I would mount a scope intended for centerfire on a rimfire.  It's generally not recomended.  I don't know why exactly, something about the reverse recoil of a .22.  I'd get a seperate cheap scope designed for .22 rimfire.

My setups:

RRA NMA4
Leupold VXII 4-12x40 AO w/fine duplex reticle (does not have turrets)
Armalite 1" 1 piece mount

Marlin 60
BSA 4x32 .22 special
Came with its own rings so I'm using those

Hope this helps.  MJD

I like Leupold VX-III optics, especially the models with a 30 mm main tube (they usually have an LR designation for long range - they have much wider adjustment ranges and are brighter than 1" scopes).  Their Varmint Hunter reticle has elevation marks for 200-500 yards (zero at 200) and windage at each range at 10 and 20 mph crosswinds; you won't have to dial in a correction under most circumstances since the hold-off is clearly marked.  A variable-power scope in the 4.5-14X to 6.5-20X neighborhood will probably be most useful in the field.  Higher magnification isn't much use in the field; I shoot in NRA Long Range competition (800-1000 yards), and can see plenty of wobble at 20X in a solid prone position with a sling.  You'll probably want a 50 mm objective for low light performance.  I use I use a VX-III 6.5-20x50 LRT with a fine duplex reticle on my competition rifle and a VX-III 4.5-14x50 LR with a Varmint Hunter reticle on my hunting/tactical rifle.  These scopes have ~4" of eye relief, so you'll want to mount them well forward to get a comfortable position in prone; mounting directly on a flat-top with extra-high rings will place them too far back.  You'll need a rail extender, and one with ~20 MOA of elevation built in is useful to keep your elevation centered where the optical performance is best.   The best prices I've found are from Brune Shooters' Supply (http://www.brunoshooters.com/); it's worth giving them a call because they often have cosmetic blemishes or last year's model at even lower prices.  I prefer to use Burris Signature Zee rings because they use floating spacers that eliminate stress on the scope tube (no lapping needed), and offset spacers are available that can be used to align the scope so you won't need to use the scope adjustments to get zeroed.

I would not recommend a fixed 10x scope for a 16” AR.  I would recommend 4x like IOR fixed a Variable power scope like Leupold, IOR, Nikon, and Trijicon AccuPoint.

Mike, could you elaborate why you wouldn't recommend 10x for 16"?
I thought magnification had nothing to do w/ length of barrel.

Thanks,

Matt.

I certainly understand Leupold VX-III line scopes are awesome but it is out of my budget range.  I would still want something less than $500.  Looks like sharing a scope between different rifles isn't a good thing.

I did read a couple of threads about Super Sniper scope.  As many said, I have hard time believeing SS scopes are made by Tasco.  has

ALAN308:

True, but if you need more than 4X, the NXS 2.5x10 is a work of art on a 16" RECCE. IMHO

Even thought it is a RRA varmint upper the upper is more in line with all-purpose weapon because it is a 16”.  I will give you accuracy at short / mid ranges and can be used for a close up work fairly well also.  So I would recommend a scope that would accomplish this.   So I recommend Leupold MRT, IOR 1-4x22mm, or Trijicon AccuPoint.  A 10x scope is for a rifle mainly shooting form 100/200yds and out.

I’m sure you can shoot it out to 700yds but it’s a 16” shooting a 223 and it will not be very effective.

This is my opinion.

I saw RRA Varminter, missed the 16 inch part.

My Oly PCR-16 has a cheap 2.5-8x hunting scope on it. Seems about right magnification wise.
