I have looked through night vision scopes and goggles before, but never knew what gen i was looking through.  I would like a scope that i could use up to 100 yards away and still be able to identify what i'm looking at (human or animal).

what gen should i be looking at purchasing?  money is a factor, as i don't have much, but am willing to save a little more.

does anyone have pictures or a link that can compare the different gens when looking through them?

Thanks

Hi Chris,

IF ONLY 100 yards is what you're after, Gen II+ will suffice. Anything more than 100yrds will take a high power illuminator of some sort.  I have included a few Gen III shots.    If I were you, I would really try to save a few pennies and get a Gen III unit.  Unless you get a really good Gen II+ unit, the difference between Gen II and Gen III is remarkable. A mini-14 (MUM) if you’re not concerned with a few small blems in the outer perimeters can be had for around $3,200.  Higher performance units/clean tubes are in the $3,400.00-$3,500.00 range. Hope this helps,

Vic

P.S. Pics through a digi-camera do NOT do these images justice.

First pic with a 6x D-760 at 250M.

A pic of a mini-14 (MUM) showing what a high power illuminator will do for you. This particuliar illuminator is effective out to 300M.

This 3rd pic, (thanks to "tth110" on this board in the EE) is a PVS-14 in a residential area.

+1

Stay away from Gen 1.

Gen II+ will work for your target distances. I would Recommend the D-440 for the Gen II+ Category. The Scope is a 3x with optional 6x doubler. Good price Tag

If you can save for a Gen III I would recommend it. Farther Target Recongnition. Better Light Amplification and longer tube life. For the Gen III category I would recommend the D-760.

Expect a $1500-$2000 jump from Gen II+ to Gen III

Run over to here. You will find images from various Gens and Units

thanks for the site Optik45, i could really see the distortion in the gen1 NV's.  the Gen2 looked a lot better.  I definitly will not get gen1.  As for gen3, i'll have to think about spending that much money.  We will see...

I would get the highest gen you can afford.
