Well im not willing right now to get a 552, but i have been looking at a 512 and 551. They are both the same price, you obviously know which has which. But i was thinking the AA battery would be far less hassle than the N-Type, which apparently lasts not nearly as long and is more of a special battery. What are your thoughts?

If you need the room use a 511 or 551.  I like my Eotech mounted as far forward as possible.

Do you need NV? If not then narrow your choice down to the 511 and 512.

I have the 511, no need for NV. The “N” batteries are not a “specialty” battery, they can be had at Lowes for $2 for 2. I keep a spare set in my VFG handle. And battery life on the “N’s” has suited me just fine.

I have the 512 and really like it.  It is a little longer and has to be mounted forward (where it is touching the forearm release ring) or use another forward rail to put a flip up iron sight behind it.  I do not use backup iron sights on my Armalite A4 so this is not a problem.

gotm4:  Besides being able to mount other optics behind the EO-Tech, is there any other reason for mounting the EO-Tech as far forward as possible?  I just ordered my first AR from RRA and it comes equipped with the EO-Tech.  It appears to be mounted as far back as possible.

Thanks.

I would vote for the 512. I like the AA battery and don't mind the extra space it takes up on the rail.

If you are going to use NV go with the 551 if not the 511 will work just fine.  As for the 512 if you are after more battery life go with that.  We sell more 512 than anything.  Either way you will love them.

For CQB work the 'scout' style mount has a MUCH better natural point of aim thus faster to get your rounds on target..  I was taught this my former Force operator/Blackwater contractor Travis Haley (aka Simplydynamic) here on ARFCOM who's forgotten more about shooting (especially longguns) than I'll ever know, he showed it to me and he showed me through live fire training that it's better for CQB.  You don't have to hunt around in the glass to center the reticle.  For long distance shots (where I'd just the irons) a more rearward mount on the receiver is much better.

For this reason I sight in my Eotech for 25yds (dead on) and my irons using the Santose IBZ (good out to 250yds).
