Ok This is NOT a bash Thread on LARUE Im just asking a question. If anyone starts bashing Ill ask mods to lock it!
I just purchased an ACOG mount, I love how deep the channel is because It looks like it cradles the site better, Anyway, I mounted it to the top of my Armalite which has a #38 EX on it and it seemed very tight and solid, Then I removed it, I noticed the throw levers gouge into the side of my rail? So I took off the Rail and tried it on my Receiver of my bushy, my Armalite, and My issue Colt M4 at my unit, It is cutting into the receivers too!, Its not that deep but still Im concerned. I tried loosening the set screws, I thought I had it to tight but It didnt make a difference. Im not too keen on a mount ruining my receivers, on my issue weapon I dont really care. But it would seem if the throw levers dig into the receiver, over time the mount will loosen and there is only so much adjustment in the system.
did I do something wrong or is this normal and I shouldnt worry about it?

Howdy Chuck! Yes I think something is wrong. Got any pics of the damage? It is somewhat normal for LT throw levers to leave some rub/swirl marks in the finish. In fact, every mount I have ever owned (KAC, ARMS, GG&G, PRI) has left some kind of wear mark on my receiver.

I would not be concerned that you will run out of adjustment on the LT levers and them becoming loose.

Grant,

What is the appropriate tightness of the levers? I know it is subjective depending on one's hand strength, but there must be a rough guide. Thanks.

As a general rule, it should be hard to push the lever open with your thumb (take some effort). If the levers are pretty difficult to open, then grab the mount and try to push it back and forth. If you can move it then tighten the levers some more.

Another thing to do is once you get the mount on the receiver and tighten the levers to where you want them, open and close them 10 times or so. This help "seat" the levers to the rail.

Hope this helps...

I set mine so they are fairly difficult to get my fingers under and pull open. I figure if they are so tight I can' t get them to budge and need to resort to using some webbing, etc. to get them started open then they are too tight. Of course, they are easier to close, but they engage and have a solid lockup. A have noticed marks on my uppers and rails but it appears like a smudge- not gouging. Thanks.

What Sovereign said.  Larue is good stuff, the best I've used, and doesn't seem to be any more damaging to a rail when properly installed than my ARMS.  Based upon my experience with Larue products, service, and their staff, I'll be looking first at Larue to supply my optic mount needs.  Again, no way to typecast me as a Larue cheerleader or shill, I'm just telling it like it is based upon my experience.

After looking closer it does appear that on the Receivers its more of a smudge but on the #38 it is gouged, It is probably the slight difference in width Id say. Im definatly keeping it, and BTW
Grant, Ill be contacting you this weekend with an order for another one for my AR10
I wish I had pics but my camera sucks and I cant get them in focus enough to see anything. Im comfortable with them now though.
thanks again

LaRue mounting instructions per the man aka Pat Rogers....

If using the LaRue Tactical Mount, ensure the rails are clean.  Place the mount on the rail and close the adjustable throw levers.  Check for eye relief, and when satisfactory, tighten the nuts on the adjustable throw levers with the supplied wrench, until they are just tight enough that you can't move them easily with your fingers.  Now take your paint pen and mark witness marks on the mount and receiver so that if removed, you can return it to the proper address.

That was from July 05 issue of SWAT about the new TA31RCO ACOG.

Pat would know best as he is running every LT product made and beats on them regularly.
