I just got a Bushmaster M4, and was wondering about mounting a Red Dot sight on it. My budget is only around a hundred bucks, I'm looking for something like the Leatherwood 1x50 Red Dot, or  if anyone had any others to suggest. Also, I am wondering which is the best way to mount it. I see from the pics thread most of you guys take off your handle and mount right to the reciever and leave your front sight in place. It seems like the front sight would be in the field of view of the red dot sight this way, was wondering if that was a problem. I'd also like to know about mounting the scope on top of the handle. Just like some opinions on which way may be better.

1st off, Welcome!!

(hint, posts are much easier to read if you hit return every so often!)

Hang out in the Optics section for a little bit, there is a wealth of info there...
You will get a chunk of: "optics should cost as much as a small car, etc" comments,
but there are cheaper red dots out there...just remember you get what you pay for...

Most properly set up sights will not interfere with the FSB, it's hard to explain without the
mounted rifle in front of you.

Best advice I can give is try to sample different optics on a rifle similar to yours...

Hi, welcome to the site.

Most guys here likes the Hakko TacPoint which is an Aimpoint clone which runs from $88 to $100.

There are two types of mounts for the flat top, straight and angled forward cantilever type.

You could also mount it on your carry handle but it will be too high to use your back up iron sights (BUIS) and you might need an additional cheek rest to get a good cheek weld on your stock.

The mount made by Aimpoint is a good one to start out with at $80+ or you could find similar lower cost brands. If you get the Aimpoint mount you also need to get the spacer to raise the scope up so you could also use your back up iron sights.

The front sight really doesn't bother most people, it's like looking at the usual iron sights except you could see the red dot on top of the front sight. If it bothers you, you could get a flip up front sight at an extra cost.

I would also recommend getting a rear back up iron sight or maybe at first always bring your carry handle sight with you.

I bought a Simmons red dot and i like it. Cost was under $100 bucks with 4 different reticles
and it goes up to 11 like Nigel Tufnel's amp.
I've been happy with it. I put it on a A2 carbine so i used a "Z" mount
with the Simmons mounted foward of my carry handle.
I got some rings that were just slightly higher and i don't see the iorn sights at all but i can still use them.

I talked to me gun shop, they acted like removing the front site was no small task, and I would really like to keep it on just in case I want to go back to iron sights. The site I was looking at is a Tru Glo 40mm. Anyone know if this site is ok? So, since I want to leave my front site alone until I can get a flip up front, I think I'll buy the red dot, buy the mounting bracket to mount site on handle, and remove handle and try that, and see which way I like better
