I posted this in the optics forum but didn't really get a response and since this question is AR15 specific, I am trying it again here.

Mods, if one of them has to be deleted, please delete the one in the optics forum. Thank you.

I have a 14.5" Colt M4A1 barreled Oly with a CMT A4 upper that I'd like to start using as a paper target/range gun for fun and would like some recommendations on a scope. I'll probably also use the scope on my other upper which has a 16" chrome moly Bull barrel.

First, a question. What is the maximum range for this gun using XM193 ammo, roughly? The reason I ask is because, if the gun really isn't accurate up to 200 yards, there's no need to buy a scope that can zoom in on a target 400 yards away. These are just numbers I am throwing out there, I have no idea what the effective range of a gun like this is, which is why I'm asking.

As far as my type of shooting for this application, it will be daytime shooting only, outdoors, both bench rest for longer range precision, and shoulder for close range fun. I have tactical optics so the size of the scope really isn't that critical as long as it isn't massive and in the way.

As far as price, this is only going to be for fun so I'd like to keep it reasonable, but won't sacrifice price for superior quality.

As of now I am thinking one of the following: ACOG, Leupold, or Nikon but am open to anything.

there are some good threads in the ammo and optics section about what you need.

Leupold is the old standby for around 900 bucks you can get the comp target model. Nightforce for 1200-1400 is the BEST YOU CAN GET! Then for the Benchrest type stuff (besides the first 2) you start seeing some fixed power Weavers and some Sightrons for about 350. The last 2 are noted for their tracking. I have looked through all of them and Nightforce is my favorite, but I have a 6-18 x 44 sightron that works good for mediumrange,500 or so. I actually still use it for 600 and 1000 because the mirage kills you and you end up dialing down anyway.

Everything mentioned so far is high quality.  I recently got an IOR M2 tactical.  It's a 4X and has good glass for a resonable price.  $350 range.  With M855 out of a 14.5 barrel it's no problem hitting milk jugs a 400m.

Burris Fullfield 2 is a good scope.  I think SWFA.com has a package with a spotter and a 3-9x.  Burris has a "Ballistic Plex" reticle available which gives you some rangefinding/trajectory compensation.

The .223 is a CLOSE RANGE ROUND! Under 200 yards is where it's most effective. If you want to shoot far get a bigger round.

I suppose all the NRA Highpower across the course shooters are not effective?

If money is no object Night Force, US Optics.

Expect 4-8" groups with that 14.5" barrel and M193 ammo from prone at 200 yrds depending on your skill and the individual barrel.

If money was no object he would not be using blasting ammo for 200-400 yard shooting would he?  If money WAS an object he would be better served with better ammo over a better scope.

Money is definitely an object. I've spent WAY too much money on this new hobby already and all that's left to buy is a good scope for some longer range shooting. I already have an EOTech for close range fun, but nothing for when I just want to take my time and do some precision shooting.

I actually have an ATN 2-6x40lu, but I just don't like it and want something new.

XM193 ammo is just blasting ammo? I bought it because I was under the impression that it was really good ammo.

As far as barrels, in addition to the one I mentioned, which just came in today by the way, I also have an Oly Ultramatch 16" Bull Barreled upper to use too. Maybe this will be a better long range upper than the Colt M4A1 barrel?

It is good-for its intended purpose.  But precision long range shooting is not its purpose.

So, what's a good long range ammo then?

Black Hills 75 gr or 77 gr OTM ammo if your barrel has a 1in7 twist.  You can try it in a slower twist barrel.  Some have had success while others did not.
