I’ve been milling over the idea of getting rid of the original carry handle knob on my CCH BUIS and replacing it with a washer and a nut. Well since we’re having a snow storm here in the Rockys and I’m out alone in my shop with nothing to do I decided to do it!

First I removed the knob and measured how much thread I would need to remove.

I then knocked out the cross bolt from the sight and hacked off the threads not needed.

Dressed up the cut with a file and touched up the cut with some cold blue followed by CLP.

An aircraft quality AN washer was stripped of its cadmium plating and also touched up with cold blue and CLP.

I then installed the AN aircraft washer and AN nut and tightened with a ratchet and socket.

Done! My CCH BUIS is now a bit lighter and the side of my receiver is a little more stream lined!

Heh, I did the same thing this afternoon too.  I used a cap nut without a washer instead; the cap nut sticks out a little farther, but covers the end of the threads and makes for a smoother profile IMO.  I think I'm going to like this setup a lot.

Put up some pics brotha! Is the cap nut parked or painted ect..... I might go that route too.

Um, why not just sell the carryhandle and buy a BUIS?

Actually I tried to sell it, but nobody was interested. So I chopped it and made it into a BUIS. And now content and happy with the results.

The hardware store only had shiny stainless; I'll try a specialty store later to get something colored more fitting for a black rifle.  Sorry, but I don't have any pics.

F4YR, I did this rather than buy a BUIS because nobody sells exactly what I want in a fixed BUIS and this is fairly close and cheap, given that I already had the parts on hand.
