I am looking for suggestions for a matte finish scope for a carbine. Nothing over 200 yds and probably compact and variable power. I would like to keep it around 300.00

Check out Leupold VariXII's if you can still find them. They stopped making this version, but they were a great scope. I bought one 2 years ago in a Matte 3X9 for $230.00. Can't remember where though.
Do a search. It's worth the effort.

Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 with Firefly reticle is a great choice for under $200. They also do a more compact model - 1.4 - 4x I think (but this costs a few $ more)

If you aren't going to be shooting over 200 yards...get an EO-Tech. You can get one in the $300 range and a 2X optical scope isn't worth the hassle.
