I am having a tough time zeroing my rifle properly. I am about 5 inches high at 50 yards using my Arms 40. My upper is a RRA midlength with the standard fixed front sight. I have raised the front sight as far as I can. Do I need to get a taller front sight? I dont want to have to purchase a rear sight with an elevation adjustment.

The ARMS #40 is set to zero propperly with the Colt M4 front sight, which is taller than all the other manufacturers. Bushmaster sells a taller front sight post for less then $3 I think. They charge a lot for shipping though, so when I do an order from them for something like this, I like to see if there are some other spare parts I need to help even it out a bit. The front sight is a quick fix though.

The taller front site helps. I still am hitting a bit high with the irons, though. If I raise it up any more the front site will protrude above the ears. Next time I buy a BUIS I will get one with an elevation adjustment.

If you are hitting high, that means you have to lower the front sight.

Roger that!  Also, you may not necessarily need the taller front sight post.  I ordered mine from Bushy, but turns out I didnt need it.   If you want to bring your groups lower, then you need to lower your front sight, not raise it.  I know, it took me a few times to figure it out but now I got it....

Thats right, lower the front sight. Lowering the sight will raise the barrel.

If I lower the front sight and raise the barrel the groups will print higher, right?

Yep.

It sounds confusing but trust me it will do the job.   If your hitting high, lower the front sight.  If your hitting low, then raise the front sight.   Elevation on the rear sight is really not necessary to be concerned with.  If I am correct, I think raising and lowering the rear sight has something to do with bullet drop.   Elevation is suppose to be done with the front sight, unless Im missing something....

If you are hitting high, you will be turning the front sight post counterclockwise - raising it (threading it out) to correct your misalignment.  With a stationary rear sight aperture and a raised front sight post, you will have to lower the barrel slightly to realign the front and rear sights, thereby lowering your point of aim/impact.

Don't listen to all these people telling you to lower the front site, they must be smoking something.  You need to raise the front site, or get a taller one.  Midway USA also sells a taller front site made by DPMS.

- NOTE:  When you turn the site in the direction of the UP arrow marked on the site (clockwise), you are lowering the site.  The label indicates where you want your bullets to hit, not which way the site is going.  Think of it like threading a screw.  Threading it in (clockwise) lowers it, threading it out (counter-clockwise) raises it.

Thanks. Thats what I thought. Any recommendations on a BUIS with elevation adjustments?

I just bought the #40 and will be going through the same thing soon. Am i right in that the taller front sight is stamped with a "F"? Where would this stamping be? and how prominent is the stamp?

I have what appears to be an F stamp on my base, but cant tell for sure, its very light...

He's right, I was wrong. I was thinking about another problem. If your already high, you need to continue to raise the front post. This will drop your barrel.

The "F" will be stamped on the left side of the FSB toward the front.

There are forging marks with "Fs" in them on the right side of the FSB and there are "F" stamped FSBs with the stamping on the left side.  They aren't the same thing.  The "F" forging mark is probably a date or manufacturer code or something and has nothing to do with front sight post height.
