Anyone have any experience with them? I never see them mentioned. Is it just that (seemingly) nobody sells them? (did a search and in two pages found one dealer) Are they overly expensive? (didn't seem so...599or so...) Thoughts? Edit to correct pricing...I was low. |

www.shepherdscopes.com Factory direct. Excellent service. I am having one fixed right now.... |
| I've had one for about 8 years now mounted on an olympic ultramatch upper and have no complaints. The optics are as clear as any I've looked through. Once you have tailored the reticle to your specific load it works great and is very fast. I've used it out to 600 yards without a problem. |
Rumors of the glass not being the highest quality, rumors of less than stellar warranty service. They sound great to me but we never hear about any military or law enforcement units using them. Unfortunately all I know is internet bs. The couple I have seen looked nice enough from as much as I could tell looking at them inside. |
+1 Marketing gimmick, IMO. Leupold rules. |
I just don't know, maybe it is-but how many people can really accurately range with mil dots quickly enough to shoot a deer? I've been debating this for years now, I should just buy one of the stupid things and see how it works. |

I would sale them but not stock them does this tell you anything! www.csgunworks.com [email protected] Here’s some testimonials about CS GunWorks for AR15 Board Mike at CS Gunworks is... |
I thought they were "factory direct" |
Have you used one? |

They sound great to me but we never hear about any military or law enforcement units using them. . You're not going to find any military or law enforcement units using them because the reticle set up is not going to give you precise hits outside of your initial 100 yard zero because the reticle is not tailored for one specific load and I think its 600 and beyond the reticle is just a circle instead of crosshairs. Plus you can't easily input windage adjustments. So for precise work a traditional set up is far far better. Once dialed in though the shepherd is very fast and requires no adjusting for the most part if engaging man size targets. I've shot it at military e types set up at various ranges out to 600 yards and could move rapidly from target to target and make hits without a problem and never stop to make adjustments. So it's fast but not precise like a police or military sniper needs. |
|
That's strange, as they actually offer "Counter-Sniper" and "Military" models...Wonder if they've altered those from the standard set-up in anyway? If not, it wouldn't surprise me if those looking for a scope for farther than 500 (where it looks like the cross hairs stop) wouldn't use it, considering the circle is 18" in diameter. You say it's not tailored to a specific load...I thought it was? Their web site actually gives you suggestions on scopes based on specific manufacturer loads. I'll say one thing, their web site needs a whole lot more pictures on it. Try to find a pic of one of their scopes, it is not easy. As to windage, how is it difficult to adjust? Shepherd has this whole page on their site on why their windage adjustment is better than everyone elses. |
|
They contacted me a one point to sale their scope if you guys would like one I can get them. You can get them factory direct like USO, & Nightforce or you can get them from dealers like me. Yes I have use one and had problems with it. I hand a Buddy that bought one their scope but no rifle so I let him use my Rem. 300win mag and we could than get it to hold zero the impact keep shifting. I guess I could give them another try I will call them. Would anyone like to test one for us? www.csgunworks.com [email protected] Here’s some testimonials about CS GunWorks for AR15 Board Mike at CS Gunworks is... |
I'm thinking the military sniper type models are named that for advertising to attract attention because although I like mine I be the first to admit it's not a scope I'd put on a sniper rifle. Looking at the website it shows that the p1 can be used for 25 different loads and the p2 23, I'm not thinking the ballistics on all those are the same, their reticle pattern just gets you in the ball park. They say stuff like within 1 moa at 600, well that a pretty big margin of error, thats why I say there good for fast hits on man size target at those ranges but not precise work like a sniper needs to do. The windage adjustment knobs are small and not easy to use. |
Well I see why you wouldn't like them if it wouldn't hold the zero, and if I were in a position like you I probably wouldn't carry them either after having a problem like that. First impressions go along way. |
| Go to Snipershide or Snipersparadise. These are considered pieces of shit. I was visiting the AMU Marksmanship school at Benning and absolutely no one ther uses them. Believe it or not, a bunch of guys do have the Sightron on personal and military weapons. But, they had to buy them themselves, and a E4,5 is looking for a bargain. Sightron seems to be doing the job for them. |
|
Lots of big comments here from people who have never used them. Characterized as "pieces of shit" simply by the fact that nobody at the "Marksmanship school at Benning" uses them? if they don't use them, WTF do they know about them? These guys are intensively trained to use mil dots. Their lives depend on that training. WTF else do you think they are going to put on top of their personal sticks? These are not designed as target scopes. They are hunting scopes, and damned good ones. CSGunWorkscom's comments about POI changing doesn't sound like a scope problem to me. You see, the Shepherd has 2 seperate reticles. Both reticles would have to screw upand shift exactly the same for you to not know immediately that you had a problem when looking through the glass. Regarding the aimless quote:
Let me translate that statement for you cuz it's a little misleading:
In addition to my own experience which has been outstanding, have spoken with dealers who actually had to deal with a warranty claim or two. Thier feedback? EXCELLENT SERVICE, GREAT PEOPLE. SLASH adds great value with his:
What the hell is the gimmick with a range finding reticle? Oh, and real risky saying "Leupold rules" on this board If it's not "tactical" then it can't possibly work or be quality, right? And threefeathers . . . geez . . . anyone that bothers to search Snipershide or Snipersparadise will find exactly the opposite of what you say. As a matter of fact, they have an EXCELLENT rep on those boards. I challenge you to post a search string that supports your statement. I bought them (yes, I have more than 1) because I didn't want to be calculating mil dots when shooting under pressure. I like the fact that I am not going to be cranking up the elevation knob before making my shot, and guess what . . . windage is ALWAYS a guess. The circles are much more intuitive for me that mil dots, and I don't need a laser rangefinder or mil dot master in my gear. I'm not saying these scopes are for everyone, but they kick ass for those who want a quality optic designed for more real world use than punching paper or impressing the other ninjas at the mall. For those guys trained to use mil dots for a living, these comments take nothing away from them or their equipment. We now return you to the familiar droning of sheep . . . |
OOH OOH ME ME!!! (for free right?) Got an M1a with a new arms #18 on it.... Its naked... It NEEDS a scope! IM or e-mail? ![]() |
| I ran a Shepherd on a Remington m700 Sendero in .300 Win Mag. I traded this setup off about 12 years ago, but really liked it (I saw Quiqley Down Under and had to have a new buffalo rifle). The Shepherd is a nice rig. I am a handloader, and once I had the right load worked up the circles worked like a charm. No problem hitting plow disks out to 500 - 600 yards or so if I remember correctly. As noted above the circle system is very fast and simple. |

I have a Shepherd on my SR-25 and I find the rifle/optic combination to be splendid. You need to understand what the scope is and what it is not. It is not an X-ring scope. The reticle cross-hairs are too thick for that. It is however, a 10-ring scope if the shooter and rifle are up to the task. What the Shepherd is is FAST. REAL DAMNED FAST. If you are faced with multiple targets at multiple distances, and are equipped with a semi-automatic rifle, no other optic comes even close. While the other guys are still lying in the dirt trying to read their mil-dots (good luck) and twirling knobs, the Shepherd equipped guy will have already hit every target, loaded up his gear, and be heading for the watering hole. Warranty work: Shepherd does not have a customer service department. It has a gruff old coot named Dan Shepherd. You have to talk to him right if you want results. If you speak to him with respect for both him and his product, he will move Heaven and Earth for you. And he really knows his shit. Really. Ranging: Mil dots have to be one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated on shooters. Everybody thinks they're great. Everybody wants them. Now, how many guys do you know who can actually use them effectively? By "effectively" I mean measuring and calculating quickly enough to get the shot off before the opportunity disappears. In all my days, I've met two; and they were both Quantico graduates. Those little ovals are extremely difficult to gauge at any distance where it matters and the math involved is appalling. The Shepherd, in addition to the 18" rings, has minute scales along the right side and top of the reticle. Once you've used minute scales, you'll wonder why you ever tortured yourself with mil dots. The trick with the Shepherd is to come up with a load that will match the particular bdc reticle you choose. If you go to Shepherd's website, or get one of their catalogs, you will have the bullet drop charts for each reticle they offer. Then, light up your favorite ballistic software and find a bullet/velocity match. Hint: A 175 gr. SMK parting company with the rifle right at 2,600 fps will track the P2 reticle like it is wire-guided out to 900 yards. The military has not issued them. And that is important because....? Good luck. Good shooting. SD |
