I've never used one before, but I was just given my grandfather's 7mm Mag topped with a Redfield 6x scope.  The rifle was bought in 1966, and I'm thinking that the scope is nearly as old.  It seems bright enough, but I wonder about the quality.

Will it hold up to the recoil?  Will it hold zero?

Yeah, but I didn't want to waste a boatload of money on pricey ammo while chasing an impossible zero

Thanks.  I don't want to get rid of it.  Anything that belonged to my grandfather is like gold to me.

you'll be fine my grandfather still hunts with one on a 30.06 remington woodmaster from roughly the same era.

Redfield = great scope.

PS my favorite is an old steel tubed Weaver and my old Redfield 4-12x44. Both are older than me.

Back in the 70's and 80's Redfields graced all my rifles, and they were great scopes. They can still give excellent service if in good condition. However, I also have one of the "new" Redfields made in Japan or somewhere after  the original company in Denver was put out of business by the EPA. It looks good, but isn't in the same class optically as the older US produced scopes. I've never been able to get the sharp focus I want. If you have one of the old US Redfields, by all means use it.

FWIw, you are only one tumble from a table from breaking the scope.  Get another optic that you KNOW can handle the recoil and put the heirloom back in the safe.

Also, if it cannot handle the recoil, you will only find that out once the damage has been done.
