I know there are many of us here who grew up through the cold war era.  Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, we have seen the Russian economy collapse, military strength dwindle, and therefore world influence decline.  With all that has gone on in the world since, we have become accustomed to regarding Russia as a "non-issue" in a security sense.  (Though, not all of us)  I have been doing lots of reading lately, and find many very interesting ....situations developing.  Namely, the moves by the U.S. in the Caspian region, and Russias growing concerns and reactions to these moves.  This area is extremely valuable strategically for both countries, not to mention China.  We have and are building bases in Kyrgyzstan (airfields), Uzbekistan, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, and this is only what I am aware of.
Russia has now completed their nuclear force modernization, and are turning their attention to beefing up their "influence" in this region.  I for one don't believe the old Russian bear is dead; only licking it's wounds to fight another day.
Obviously they have their problems, but what do you think?  And if you don't know anything about the subject......
edit:  damn it!  I didn't notice the forum I'm under.  Sorry about that.
