Hello, I'm a Marine Lcpl stationed out of 29 Palms, CA.  I'm heading out to Iraq in 2006 on my second deployment.  Im looking into buying myself an optic system for my A2.  I have a non-infantry MOS but on my first deployment I pulled base perimeter security duty as well as several convoys.  I'm looking for an optic system like the aimpoint but at a better price and the tacpoint seems to fit the bill.  Could anyone comment on its durability?  Has anyone deployed with this sight? Im not out in the field for the most part so I dont really feel justified spending 500 or so on a scope when theres other gear I need to get as well.  Also, could anyone point me to a mount that would co-witness the sight?  Thank you for your time.

First off, thank you for your service Lcpl Irizarry! You might want to check out this review, I am sure it will answer all your questions about the Tacpoint.

Hi Devil Dog,

I suggest that you get the best that you can afford. A used Eotech can be had for $250 or even less here at the EE forums. If you are not leaving until 2006, that gives you plenty of time to save a few bucks a month. I spent 6 months in Iraq with MWSS 273 and trained with you guys before we left last Feb. That desert WILL destroy your gear, so you do not want cheap stuff. Stay safe. By the way, I am still with MWSS -273 and we just sent a detachment to augment our sister unit in Iraq.

what im wondering with the Eotech style sights is how do you keep the dust out of that lens? I like the flip caps the aimpoint style sights have.  I might just have to suck it up and save up,  maybe my best bet is to buy used.  Are there any older aimpoint models I should stay away from or look for?

Marine,
Your butt is on the line and you want to use a cheap Chinees knockoff?  After your deployment you can always sell it to another Marine that is deploying and get some of you money back.

Do yourself a favor and get an Aimpoint. Tried and true design and quality will always win with me. Plus they back their product even if it's old and outdated.

If not an Aimpoint then get an EOTech. Don't get a Tacpoint

Forest has the right idea.  Sell your PS2 or what ever else and get the ACOG.  Great peice of gear and worked VERY well for us when we were in the sanbox.  Worth the money, check the local gun store to see if any Marines returning are selling their old gear and try E-Bay.  Good luck and stay safe.

Get an Aimpoint and a gooseneck mount.  You owe yourself some quality gear.

Get an Aimpoint M2, ML2, or ACOG or stick with the irons.

You are a Marine, you know how to use the sights that came with the rifle. DO NOT trust your ass to a cheap sight. Go with quality gear, or use what you were issued.

Thanks everyone for your input.  I definietly agree quality gear is paramount, thats why I asked for comments on its durability.  Aimpoint + goosneck mount looks like the way to go.  Can you replace the stock handguards with rails and get a mount to co-witness that way? Is it even worth the cost vs simply using a gooseneck?  Also what is the difference between the older Aimpoint and the newer ones?

BTW the goal isnt to race out my issue weapon.  I simply want  a good set of optics to augment the iron sights.
