I've been pretty sold on my Simmons 3-9x30 and 3-9x40 scopes, they are good scopes and i havent had a problem with them, ever. They keep a pretty good zero and are oblivious to the elements.

My question is, what magnification should i be looking to for my match AR15 that I'll be shooting at a minimum of 50 feet and a max of 500-600 meters? I will probably only be shooting up to about 200-250 meters MAX, but i still want to be able to see a target at maybe 25 meters.

Do you think a 3-9x magnification would do the job? Maybe a 4-16x? More? Are 8-32x's really as good as they seem?

I'm talking magnification not scope brands, by the way... (just so this thread doesnt get bombarded with "Buy a leupold" or "acog is the way to go", because im NOT going to get either one )

4X should do you fine.  There comes a point that the ballistic capability of the round will not meet expectations.  Just keep the expectations reasonable.  HTH.

I'm using a 8-32 scope and above 14-16x, there's not enough light transmission and the picture is blurry.

But from 8x-12x, I can see targets clearly at 25yd to 100yd+. At 25yd, it's got more of a fishbowl effect with the 8x setting because its too powerful.

4x works well for all ranges but target ID and POI ID at 200yd or farther is almost improbable with a 4x scope unless you use Shoot-N-See targets.

3x-9x given the o/a package, 3x-10x or even 4x-14x but you invariably end up with a bigger scope.  I hate to do what I was told not to do, but I'm a big Leupold fan, paticularly the MR/T 3x-9x for the AR.  I previously had a big LR/T 3.5x-10x 40 obj. and it was alot for the SPR. My vision has gotten crappy as of late and I used the 9x on about everything from 50 to 300 yds on the range.  Don't shoot any further than that really.  5.56 makes tiny holes at 100, and VERY TINY at 300.  Out past 100 I need a good spotting scope anyway.
