| Couldn't I just cut a circular piece of camo veil material or USGI skeeter net, put it over my objective, then push my Butler Creek flip up over that, and voila, I've got a $20 killflash for pennies (or whatever the cost is for 1/500th of a skeeter net) ? |
Great. Then I can take off like a rocket and fly to Miami for a nice daiquiri and be back to the office before anyone notices I'm gone. While your response was not necessarily related to my question, your overwhelming confidence in me and my abilities was a definite morale boost and appreciated . I would think if tastefully done, the result would be the same as a killflash.
You're wanting to improvise a $20 part? My wife would respect the heck out of that - it's a good thing she doesn't read/post here or I would be getting an earful of "Why can't you be more like airbiscuit?" tonight. |
Just asking. I've spent thousands and thousands on everything else. The question arose as a result of receiving my $850 Leupold Mark 4 and the wrong killflash for it which won't fit a Mark 4. After looking at it I wondered if one won't fit my Mark 4, then why not use the things I suggested and spend the $20 on another new teflon mag.

The one that fits the Mark 4 is available, but it is a $50 part instead of the $20 leupold branded ones. Try www.camouflage.com/ The key to a killflash is the thickness of it as well as the honeycomb construction, so a piece of netting may work, but will probably not work as well as the real thing. So it proably falls into the "you get what you pay for" category. as always YMMV |
Thanks for the link Ahab. I had not thought of pantyhose, but I can see how it, or standard soft netting, wouldn't protect....which is a good point that I had not really thought of that much. Also, what I noticed was the construction of those killflashes on the Ahab link have very thin cell walls and still block 15% of the light. A thicker net or netting would likely block alot more light and adversely effect light gathering. Might be better to drop the money on an official killflash. Sorry, Hardshell, you can't use me an example for your wife |
Used only to kill the flash pantyhose has been used successfully for years in the military and with police. I apologize for Lumpy196 as he is usually only good for smartass remarks in my experience. There are many people on this board who have helped me and will help you down the road any chance they get. |
Well thank you sir. I'll try harder to live up to your expectations, especially when it comes to a forum I moderate in. Or maybe I should check into resigning.... |
Thanks Gont. I would hope Lumpy doesn't strenuously moderate things like thread hijacking and off topic sarcasm. I'm sure he doesn't as the quickest way to lose all credibility is through hypocrisy. I did not know that panty hose was used for such purposes. Does it effect light gathering alot?
In all honesty I think Lumpy was pretty charitable here. Mosquito netting is frickin terrible for this task as is pantyhose - any dust will easy get trapped in it and make your mesh, a blind... If you really think you need a killflash (i.e. someone might want to return something to you...) you dont want to be halfassing it with something that will reduce you capability and be a liability... -Kevin |
Some things make pretty good sense. Others dont. I chose to quote the idea that I thought made most sense. |
I couldn't tell what Lumpy's comment was in relation to my inquiry. Yes, generally, it was most charitable as he thinks I can do anything I want. But it shed light on nothing, wasn't entertaining, and was at best inane . I appreciate the other responses as they answered my inquiry, so thanks gentlemen.

| Pantyhose are cheap and not as good as a killflash but it was used extensively when I was in the army. Light gathering was not affected all that much and it was easily replaceable every day if necessary. By the way this was a couple top tier units doing this not just regular infantry. I must admit this was several years ago though. |
Thanks Gont, good info.
| Why in heavens name would you not just spend the $ 20 on a killflash that works? You do realize that the point of these things is so that people won't be able to blow soup can sized holes in your body when they spot you? Seems like the kind of thing you could spend a fin on. |
Uh, I just spent almost a grand on a new Leupold Mk4 scope, bought some ARMS rings, etc., to outfit my SPR Mod. 0 clone and put my other almost a grand LRM3 scope and Badgers back on my GA Precision McMillan stocked NM accurized M1A/M25 clone. Add that up and I think that I'm not averse to spending a $20 (which is always less than my bar tab). It was a question, I thought a valid one. Apparently some guys that shoot at people for a living used pantyhose at times and they certainly need a killflash more than you or me. In fact, I'll likely spend the extra $20 on a nifty DPMS 20 rd. curved mag.........................
It is possible - however from persoanl experience in Afghan this method will not work there - or apparently Iraq either as the fine talcum powder dust just sits into the mesh. |
You asked the inane question. Lumpy answered it appropriately. The question was inane because the preface of the question began "Can I". Asking how effective an item is in accomplishing a given task isn't the same as asking "Can I". You got the answer to your question and you're insulted because your question was worded poorly?! |
New and a smartass. What a combo ARFireer ...
LOL professor! I'm sorry the precision of my query does not meet with your standards. However, I think everyone else understood it. The correct smartass response would have been "I don't know, can you?" Obviously telling me I "can do anything I want" is incorrect and inane as I want to do many things that I can not do. I see the doors to the sycophant circus clown car have swung opened and the usual clowns spilling out doing their acts, so I'm out of here. Sycophantic clowns are irritating and a waste of time. Again, thank you to the gentlemen who took the time to answer my question and provide intelligent insight.

The ones made by Tenebraex (sp?) is light years ahead of the ones made by Loopy. The Tenebraex honeycombs are deeper/longer and therefore hide alot better. I have read that some military snipers don't like them because the rob the scope of about 10% of it's light gathering. I have taken mine on and off at different times to see how much the KillFlash robs the the scope of light and I could not tell much difference at all. I would say it would be a decision to use one during lowlight hours but for midday it would be a major plus to have one. BTW I keep mine on all of the time. |
