Nice.  The HK416 looks like it has a the standard rail height.  I wonder if you could use their rear with a standard FSB?

Overall this is a very solid set up, typical KAC quality work.  The sight itself adjusts like any typical front sight.  The unit locks down with the little lever in the pictures.  Once you flip the lever, the sight is spring loaded up.  Once it reaches the full up position, you can leave it as is, or lock it with the lever.  Without locking it, it appears that the sight is canted forward ever so slightly.  When you lock it in the up right position, it straightens up and is very solid.

This is one of two I've ever seen for sale.  Both are from a private seller who knows someone somewhere thing.  I bought it for an outrageous price, but I wanted it to eventually build a USMC East Coast SAM-R.  Right now it is collecting dust...  Need to put together enough money for the rest of the rifle.

For sure! I love my Mangonels. They also solve the gas block/handguard rail heighth problem because the front sight has two notches, one for each application.

I recently bought the YHM unit...very impressed. I thought it was much more solid than the gg&g. It is really tight and solid. I only had to adjust the FSP one notch (Bushy 16" carbine flattop). I did have to adjust the windage about 2/3 to the right, but it is dead on. I removed it and re-installed it several times and it maintained zero. The adjustment knob on the side is very tight despite not having a detent or a something similar. It takes some deliberate effort to turn it. Very good unit as far as I'm concerned....good price.....YMMV, as I am just a keyboard commando. I have no experiences with the Cav Arms unit....I do prefer A1 sight apertures to the A2's, but what do I know?

There's a lot of info here on BUIS. Good stuff...but believe it or not I couldn't find the answer to my problem (maybe I overlooked it).

I'm shopping for a AR-10--never bought a AR rifle of any type in my life. So I surfed a while and finally decided upon a Armalite AR10A4 BN SPR.

So there I was, corresponding with the Armalite rep via email on what I what to come with it and low and behold, I can't clear up an issue. It is.....is any AR-style front and/or rear site compatible with any other AR-caliber?

I asked the rep and he swears no, "that I have to use AR-10/.308 specific BUIS in order for them to work properly."

I was under the impression this stuff was so versatile that any detachable site could be used on any AR with a picatinney rail. But, the Armalite rep stated the picatinney rails were different sizes on the .223 AR and .308 AR. Is this right?

I've been surfing the web and went to Yankee Hill Machine Co. and ALL their stuff doesn't specify whether it good's for AR-15s or AR-10s!!!  What the heck???

Can someone please clear this up for me?  Much thanks!

Has anyone else found this to be true? Seems to make sense. However, depending on how steady/firm the Mangonel fold ups are, they could potentially slightly move as well I guess.

I don't know what Gamma762 saw, but YHM, CavArms and LaRue all make A1-style rear BUISs.

I put the Cav Arms unit on a lightweight build because it only weighs 1.3 oz.  It's sturdy enough for my uses, but it looks like a hard impact on one side or the other could bend the sight to one side or the other.  It is basically a milled aluminum "H" with the top of the H being the protective ears for the aperture and the bottom being the clamping surfaces.  The sides of the H are 1/8" or less thick.

The A1-style LaRue looks really heavy duty and someone discussed the YHM unit above.

Tagging with a more complete (and hopefully growing) BUIS chart like TheRicker at Adco made.

The BUIS Chart

I am running a side thread here to collect missing heights, weights etc.

Hopefully once we get this chart to a more complete state we can add it to the first post of this sticky, or even get it under the general site information/guides.

Tagged, really thinking seriously about the Larue BUIS but I'm not sure if I'll like shooting with it on the upper along with the Aimpoint M2.  I've never shot with a BUIS & Aimpoint at the same time, so I'm not really sure what this would be like or if any issues would arise.

On another unrelated note, if the Larue BUIS is mounted as far back as possible by the charging handle, is it better to have the Aimpoint around T10 using the standard Larue QD Aimpoint M2 mount OR put the Aimpoint as far forward as possible, past T12 & the delta rings, using the Larue Cantilever Mount?

Will non-folding rear BUIS's work with most all red-dot setups?

Will the Troy, YHM, GG&G, & LaRue BUIS's work with an "F marked" FSB? Of these, which are spring loaded, and which lock up / down? Of these, which are the tighter / less sloppy? I know the LaRue is fixed. Thanks!!!

I know this is probably too down-tech for many of the fast-movers around here, but if your optic croaks, why can't you just unscrew the knobs or flip the levers and slap the old A2 carry handle sight back on?
I keep mine in a cleaning kit pouch on my web gear where I can retrieve it in about a second.

If you had been using an Aimpoint or ACOG or whatever, wouldn't you pretty much need to pull it off anyway the first chance you got?  I think if the action were that close, I wouldn't really need a rear sight.

Unless you were some kind of high-zoot SpecOps person (a real one, in real life) where the danger of your non-battery-powered ACOG going so tits-up in the middle of a CQB firefight that you had to shuck it for Plan B was a real concern, a few extra seconds wouldn't kill you (pardon the pun).

So, is all this BUIS obsession a valid concern for having every contingent already on the gun, or is it just another gadget fetish?

Well, for starters, the A2 carry handle IS a BUIS if you normally mount an Aimpoint or whatever.  ;)

Not all Aimpoints or ACOG sights have secondary sighting systems.  If your ACOG or AIMPOINT or EOTHINGY or whatever died on you, flipping up a rear BUIS will be ALOT faster than installing the A2 handle.  And if you are shooting a timed IPSC 3gun match or being fired on by people intent to end you, then that ime does matter.

Do you need a BUIS to go plinking at the range?  Nope.  Might be a good idea to have something incase your Aimpoint battery dies and you forgot a spare, but it's not the end of the world either.  That being said, many people do have a legitimate need for a BUIS, be it for sporting or military/LE reasons.  I don;t think it's a gadjet fetish.

One thing I was wondering, is what locking position do the different sights have. I see the lock/spring loaded column, but it doesn't say where they lock.

I know some like the GG&G one, you have to physically push a button to unlock it, then manually push it into the up position where it locks again. Are any of the sights set up where they simply stay folded down w/o being locked, so they may just be pushed up w/o needing to unlock, and then lock once in the up position?

More than just spec-ops get into CQB battles.  Regular infantry, and even some non infantry do it too.  And anytime, you are in a battle, close quarters or not, you want your gun back up and running as soon as possible.
Even in the civillian world.  Cops probably would want to be able to quickly switch to a backup faster.
Home defense would be another reason.
And of course pure convenience of having it there already instead of carrying the bulky carry handle, or mounting it to a side rail.

.040 Higher Front Sight Post (due to the slightly higher detach carry handle)

I will be mounting a TACPOINT I in place of the carry handle and an ARMS #40 Low Profile BUIS.
The ARMS BUIS will line up with the .040 higher sight post, but will a standard 1/2" riser give me a perfect cowitness with the front sight post?
