I am looking for a scope for my RR Standard A4. I think I have narrowed it down to either the Nikon Monarch 3x9 or the Leupold VX II 3x9. I have not been able to look at these side by side. Would I go wrong with either one of these? Should I be looking at some other scopes? I will primarily be shooting paper and the occasional critter. Thanks, Steve |
| The Monarch is probably the better scope optically. Also look at the Weaver Grand Slam. www.swfa.com has good prices. |
The VX II is last years VX III and I dont think that the Monarch is a better scope....but if you shop around you might be able to get what your looking for! Also I dont think either scope would be a bad choice.... Bigant |

I would strongly recommend the Weaver Grandslam series scopes. Weaver has done a great job on these scopes: Solid one-piece construction, fabulous light transmission, fully multicoated optics, and all at a great price. Natchez www.natchezss.com also has very good prices on Bushnell Elite 4200 scopes. These are also great optics for the money. These may be the best scopes available, and compare very very well against even the swarovskis, schmidts, etc. These europeans may have a slight edge, but not enough to justify spending $900 instead of $300... I have been a long time leupold fan. However, they are, in my opinion, losing ground. Leupold has increased prices and has not really adopted anything that I'd consider an improvement. The new Leupold VX series are still not one-piece tubes. They are nice scopes, but do not offer any improvement over the Grandslam or Elite 4200 series. I've purchased Leupold Vari X III's for years and still own several. However, my most recent purchase was an Elite 4200 1.5-6x for $269 from Natchez, and it is every bit as good, or better, than my leupolds. My next scope will be a grandslam SWFA has VXII 3-9x for $299. The 3-10 Grandslam is $249. I know this is not originally on your list, but I would strongly urge you to look at the Grandslam. I am not a Nikon fan, and find that nikons are overpriced and do not offer any real advantage. Frozenny |

Two years ago, the folks at SWFA recommended the Grand Slam over Leupy or any other scope they had in that price range. I got the 6x20x40, and I couldn't be happier with it. Leopold owners that look through it all say the glass is clearer. I also like Nikon...the Buckmaster 4.5x14x40 is a smidge clearer, TO ME, than my Burris Fullfield II in the same magnification. I got the Buckmaster for $60 less than the Burris. I'm happy with both of those scopes, but the GS is better glass, period. If I might make a suggestion...try a little more oomph in the magnification. I find the 4.5x14 to be ideal...I would imagine that if you're critter shooting at around 300 yards or so, you'd like the extra power. Since most of the GS line is about the same price, the extra power doesn't cost any/much more. The GS also comes with an adjustable dioptor, which makes a huge differnce to me...sometimes I have my prescription glasses on, some times I don't...so being able to refocus the scope is a great plus. The 3x9 is $250 at SWFA, the 4.5x14 is $325...you get more power, AND an adjustable objective on the 4.5x14. Think about it. |
