| I've got an A2 upper. If I'm going to add any kind of scope or optics would I be better off or save any money by getting an A3 upper rather than by a $100 + dollar Ben Cooley co-witness mount for the carry handle? Also, if I did have an A3 upper, is there a rear sight that I could attach to the rail that would allow me to use the factory mounted front sight and co-witness through a red dot scope? |
My shooting buddy is using the above mount, or something VERY similar on a full length preban (I think) Colt with no problems. Not to insult your intelligence, the mount screws into the hole on the A2's carry handle and from there you can mount what you please. If you ask me nice maybe I can nab a picture or two of the mount on his AR and his mount on my AR. That rail is about as KISS as you can get and only runs around $60 depending how hard and where you look. Some of them come with ~45 degree mounts for the side as well so you'll have (roughly) / - \ |
ARMS #39-A2. It should fit over dissipator handguards no problem "For the A1 and A2 carry handles on M16 rifles". "does not fit on detachable handles." |

Where it appears attached to the handguard is just an ARMS "brush breaker". It's a stamped steel part that screws to the front of the mount to keep brush and other assorted wilderness from getting wedged in your rifle. It's removable. I've used an ARMS#38s-ex (same length as the #39-A2) on a dissipator and the brush breaker, when attached, protrudes into one of the vent holes on A2 rifle length handguards. The brush breaker will contact the top aluminum heat shield, but only slightly scratched the finish after all day at the range. The brush breaker barely affects accuracy... adds about 1" @ 225yds. |
