I am having a tough time getting a new NIKON bore sighted on my Rock River with a flat top rail.  I have a Rock River scope mount for the rail with 1" rings.  With the rifle in a padded vice I remove the bolt assembly and bore sight to a target on the wall about 15' away.  Trouble is when I put the scope in the rings I can get the cross hairs no closer than about 4" above the bullseye as seen thru the bore.  I know the scope sits above the bore about 2.5 - 3", but this would still not get me to hit the target at this close distance.  Should I start out with a shim between the tube and the rear ring?  If so, what makes good shim material.  Thanks

You are boresighting MUCH to close to the rifle.  For boresighting, I like to use a minimum of 50yds.  At 15', the angle is too great due to the height over bore of the optics.
