I am trying to decide if I want an A2 or an A3 for my first AR. When the carry handle is remounted, does it zero every time absolutely, or is it a hit and miss proposition? For that matter, do the optics zero after remounting?

Thanks

The handle may not return to EXACT zero, but unless you're using it for match-type shooting, you'll probably never notice. As far as optics returning to zero; that depends on the mount/rings you use.

To mount a scope with QD capability, and be reasonable sure it'll return to zero, take a look at the Armalite 1-pc mount, the ARMS #22 rings, or the Larue mount. There are other brands, but theses are all I can think of off the top of my head.

Thanks Zardoz. I want the reliability of the A2 carryhandle and the versatility of the A3 rail. No matter which way I go, its gonna be a tradeoff. I'm just trying to find the lesser of two evils.

Well, if ya want ulta-versatile, you can always sell the carry handle to offset some of the cost of an ARMS#40 folding BUIS (which will never need to be removed, negating the zero retention problem), and mount the scope in one of the mounts I mentioned above. That way, you'd have all the bases pretty much covered.

Edit: I almost forgot...if you get your dealer to order an A3 rifle directly from Bushmaster, he can specify NO carry handle, or even to replace it with an ARMS#40 for about the same price as the carry handle would be. Call BM (if that's the brand you're going with) and see what your options are. BM is very easy to work with.

What will the primary use be?

I've found that my A2 can be quite versatile also.

If shooting primarily with glass, the A3 upper is probably better for mounting purposes although my scope sits quite nicely on top of my carry handle.  It's also nice to be able to switch to irons without having to remove the scope.  If choosing this option you need to be careful that the objective on your scope is not too big or it will block your view in the shoot-through carry handle mount.

If you are shooting w/ red dots, it seems most guys like them over the HGanyways.  My A2 with a gooseneck mount worked very good for a while.  Now it's a railed HG with my Aimpoint on them.

So the BUIS will allow me to shoot either/or at almost the same time? Sweet!

I talked to BM and they are happy to mix and match.

Well, I dont really have a primary use yet. When I have 6 AR's, they will be designated. meanwhile, I spose that range plinking, shooting reactive targets in the field and I am excited about learning to call coyotes.

How much is holdover a factor when mounting optics to a carry handle as opposed to rail mounted optics?

What is HG?

Thanks for the input guys!

HG = Handguards

I haven't found much deviation from the basic ballistic charts for my 168 grain .308 with the carry-handle mount...but I haven't done any shooting outside of 300 yards.

50 yards  +1"

100 yards  +2"

200 yards  0

300 yards  -8"

Not sure about anything farther out.
