I would be thankful for a description of the differences between the older CompM and the newer M2 sights. Is it just battery life (1000hrs. vs. 10 000 hrs.)? Is overall ruggedness the same? Wasn't it this older version that got adopted as the M68?

Thanks

It is my understanding that the new aimpoint's dot is not a masked down dot, which results in a cleaner clearer dot.  And the battery life is longer (this was the big deal).  Other than modernization things (battery/windage/elevation retention) they are the same.

The M2/ML2's also use a one-piece body, instead of the 2-piece of the earlier generations.

As mentioned, the earlier optics used a 10 MOA LED masked down to 3 MOA, while the M2/ML2 uses an unmasked 4 MOA LED, giving a clearer dot.

Battery life is 36 times better than the CompM/ML and 10 times better than the CompM XD.

So are there two versions of the older Ms, CompM and CompM XD? Whats the difference? Mine says Comp M on the markings, but the box says CompM XD.

The difference between the CompM and CompM-XD is in the text you quoted from Troy.  Battery life.  The CompM has only 1/36th the battery life of the M2 while the XD models have 1/10th.
