Is it possible to find an inexpensive red dot scope for under $100 that will last through several 1000 rounds without falling apart??? Will be going to a fun show this weekend and I know very little about optics. It will be mounted on a rail on A2 carrier handle. ANY advice will be helpful.

Check out this Aimpoint copy. www.nightvisionweb.com/tacpoint.htm I've purchased Russian optics for my AK's from them and had good a experience but this Aimpoint copy is Japanese. They claim its not an Airsoft toy. |

Ill let you guys know at the end of next week how well this aimpoint copy works. Ive been looking at buying a Aimpoint but havnt been able to get enough cash, but after seeing this post and the link to the copy i decided to order one. Talking to the guy on the phone, he said hes had no complaints about them and that they are intended for live firearms, not airsoft, and that they hold up very well. Cost me 139.00 shipped, not too bad if it ends up being a decent sight. Viper out....... |

The guy on the phone was probably Dmitry....he has steered me in the right direction regarding optics for my AK's a few times. My shooting is mostly 100 yd. and some plinking and don't need to spend Aimpoint bucks for a scope. Let us know how it works ASAP, I'll be in the market for one myself in about 2 weeks. |

I picked the red dot scope that AIM had (I'm 15 min from there) It looks good, pretty sturdy. It has 11 light settings along with elevation and windage adjustments and an extra battery. For $25 I couldn't pass it up after looking at it. Now if it preforms as well as it looks. Now off to the funshow in the morning for an A2 hand carrier mount. I'll give an update with pics if ya want. (If I can't figure out how to post pics )

AK-Joe, I am thinking I want this somewhat forward and lower, so the goose neck style carry handle mount is the way to go? Do you by chance have a link for this style mount? Thank you for your input. Mike |

Well guys, I recieved the Tacpoint today. Although i dont have time to post any picks today ill give you my general opinion. It is a decent sight for only 130.00 IMO. Came in a unmarked solid white box with batteries, mount, and flip up lens caps but no instructions or manufacturer info. It only has 5 brightness settings which should be fine for most people. The DOT on its highest setting is really bright but a little dispersed but not any more then my Hakko , and is alot better then the ones ive seen in the pro-points, BSA red dots anda few others. I will say i can not compare it directly to a Aimpoint since I dont have one, but it looks similar. It uses two batteries LR44 , small watch size, i would assume the same type the aimpoint uses but im not sure. Over all it seems to be nice and for the money i like this tube style red dot over the Hakko type. I am however gona get ahold of nightvisionweb.com and see if he has any info on the manufacturer. His website states this sight has a lifetime warreny, but it came with no info regarding it. I will try to get some pics up by sunday so you can have a better look at it, but it does look just like the pic on his web site. Im sure a couple people will accuse me of useing a airsoft sight sincei did decide to use a mount sold by a airsoft dealer, but this red dot is desighned for live fire, at least that is what ive been told from nightvisionweb . Only time and use will tell how well is built, but first impressions are pretty good. Viper out............... Will try to get you a estimate of batt. life. I can tell you its rock solid on my flattop, but I dont intend on beating the crap out of it to see if it holds up

I see what you mean about the size difference. Not to worried about it as long as it works well. I am however going to see if I can find some of the Aimpoint flip covers and see if they will fit. The ones it came with are not the best ive seen and the frint one has a ridge inside of it which only allows it to slid onto the front about a quarter of an inch. I think I may havea problem with the front cover falling off when I try to fire it but i wont know untill sunday. If the aimpoint cover slides on farther, i should be able to use it. Ill try to get some more pics, closer up of it tomarrow and post them. Over all im happy with it. Viper out.............. |
| I have a Tasco BKRD42 which I've had on my 12ga. for Turkey, and used extensively on my AR's, and have recently moved it to my AK with no ill effects. $45 and no problems. Yeah - I'd say it held up well over 1000 rounds, so I can highly recommend it. Tasco BKRD42 from Midway |

My limited experience with "cheap" red dots has been with BSA's and a C-more knock off. I had these both mounted for a time on a Mosin nagant (7.62x54) Russian rifle, Remington 700 .270, and my AR15 M4. They held zero while on the rifles, rezeroing was an issue, not to bad though. I do not think I fired more then 50-70 through the Mosin or 700 with these red dots, but the AR15 had about 250-350 rounds fired with these dot sights (no problems). It would seem to me that the cost of the Aimpoint is due to the anodized all weather finish and its ability to be submerged to so many feet for an extended period of time, drop tests and so on... Batteries and CET technology all add up to a true combat sight. They are made to withstand the abuse of combat and last. But when I consider the C-More, OKO, and Kobra, these sights are tuff as nails and their cost is substantially less then the Aimpoint and they will stand up to regular abuse. I can not speak for the TacPoint here but, it sure looks appealing at that price for the budget minded.

| Well guys, Ive only been able to run about 150 rounds thru the rifle with the Tacpoint on it, but had no zeroing problems. the elevation and windage adjustments seem to lock in pretty solid. All of the thread on caps, Batt, Elev. and windage and oring sealed. I did however discover the issue I was haveing with the front flip up cover was user error. The cover must be forced on so it can lock into a groove on the front of the sight. I personaly like it better then my Hakko BED-24. Only time will tell how well it will hold up. For the 130.00 spent im happy with it. |
| Im not sure of the best wayto test for the parallax issue. I can say the visual aspect of looking thru the sight is the same as my Hakko, and it is parrallax free. As for mounting, look at the photos on the previous page. If you are interested in the same type of mount IM me and ill get you the info where i got it from. you could also call nightvisionweb and discuss it with him. Hes a nice guy and answers any questions. |
| I've been looking at a dot sight, and someone suggested the Hakko. I know that the OKO is good, but I'm on a budget, so I was looking at the Tasco mentioned by Zhukov. Can anyone say whether or not paralax is an issue w/ either the Hakko or the Tasco. Do you have to center the dot to be on target? Thats my main concern besides price. Thanks guys. |
| My Simmons Red Dot seems to be holding up well. C&S Gunworks hooked me up with it when I too was looking for an inexpensive unit and it was well under $100. |
| After a little more us of the Tac-point it does seem to be parrallax free. I was messing around with it in my living room and aimed at a corner of a light switch cover. No matter where i moved my eye in the sight tube, the dot remained on the corner of the light switch cover. Put another 200 rnds theu it yesterday, and its still holding zero. I may buy another for my M4 soon. |
| Just glanced at the post again and figured id answer the last question. the lense does appear red in tint. Like a ruby coating or somthing. Looks pretty slick. Since my last post ive got about 600 rounds down range with this Tacpoint and i still have no issues. Hope it holds up. |
